Thinking Thankful Thoughts in 1-H!
It is hard to believe that it is November already! The students in 1-H have been extremely busy throughout the last two months and can't wait for their parents to see their hard work during the upcoming American Education Visitation Day and the Parent / Teacher Conferences. They have come to learn the classroom procedures and routines like the back of their hand and continue to work incredibly hard at each and everything that is put on front of them. I could not be prouder of the students in 1-H!

In Math, the students have been learning about visual patterns and even and odd numbers. We love to practice the rhyme about these numbers: "0, 2, 4, 6, 8 even numbers are so great! 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 odd numbers are divine". The students are also working on perfecting their use of the number line and number grid for counting, recognizing patterns and adding and subtracting. During October, the students were working on telling time to the hour and we are going to take that a step further and start telling time to the half hour and quarter hour. There are so many interesting things coming up in Math and the students in 1-H just can't wait to learn all of these new concepts.

The students continue reading wonderful stories at the rug where they have been practicing with contractions and all different blends. We have also started our Guided Reading lessons where the small groups are really developing into great readers and continue to use the many different reading strategies when they come to a difficult word. I constantly see the students "getting their mouth ready" with the beginning sound of the word and "looking across the word" to make the ending sound. We have also started recognizing small known words within larger more difficult words and this helps us to "chunk" a word. All of the reading groups are growing and developing as more confident readers at an incredible rate. I am so proud of each of the students!

Within our Social Studies lessons, the students will begin learning more about our neighborhood workers and how neighbors within a neighborhood help one another. They will also learn and discuss the upcoming holiday of Thanksgiving and the different traditions that individuals take part in on that day. We have already found out that the students of 1-H are incredibly thankful of so many things in their life and I am thankful for each of my students this year!
Finally, the students in 1-H took a trip to the Outdoor Lab on October 27th from 1:45-3:10pm. This was a wonderful experience for our entire class where they gotto learn first hand about the environment around them. Most students can not wait until they are able to head back to the Outdoor Lab again next year and maybe they will get to touch a frog again!!
