HOW ARE YOU FEELING?

Who is your School Counselor?
Mrs. Denise Malone, MA
What are School Counselors?
School Counselors are a type of helper in your school. We help kids with things like problem solving, understanding feelings, and making friends!
What do School Counselors do?
Mrs Malone will...
- talk with individual students,
- meet with students in small groups,
- visit classrooms to teach lessons about things that will help students in school, and out of school,
- serve as a resource to parents to help their child through a difficult time,
- serve as a resource to teachers.
Who are School Counselors for?
Your School Counselor is here for EVERYONE! I am here for every student, every teacher, and every parent who is part of the James Fallon School community.
What type of things will the School Counselor be teaching my child?
SPRING
With state standardized tests coming up, we will be working on relaxation techniques in grades 1 - 5. As a parent, you can help your child by making sure they get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast. Many students have a fear that if they don't do well, they may not be promoted. Reassure them that this is not the case. The tests are simply a way to see all that they have learned so far. As part of the Social Decision Making and Problem Sovling Curriculum we have adopted, all students have been taught how to do a "feelings fingerprint". Feelings fingerprints help students recognize certain feelings in their bodies.
Kindergarten - Since kindergarten students do not take state standardized tests, we have been working on friendships on how to give a compliment.
First Grade - Students are utilizing the "STOP, KEEP CALM" strategy which involves self-talk and deep breathing.
Second Grade - Students made anger turtles to remind them what to do when they get angry. If you are feeling angry, go in your shell, take some deep breaths, think of a good solution to your problem and come out.
Third Grade - Students will be making remote controls. They will learn that their brains are like a television set with many channels. When you are feeling angry, nervous, scared, etc. you need to change the channel in your brain to something that makes you feel happy and good.
Fourth and Fifth Grade - Students will be experiencing some positive imagery lessons, as well as, progressive muscular relaxation (PMR). Both of these lessons should assist during test taking time.
