HOW ARE YOU FEELING?

Who is your School Counselor?
Mrs. Denise Malone, MA
What are School Counselors?
School Counselors are a type of helper in your school. We help kids with things like problem solving, understanding feelings, and making friends!
What do School Counselors do?
Mrs Malone will...
- talk with individual students,
- meet with students in small groups,
- visit classrooms to teach lessons about things that will help students in school, and out of school,
- serve as a resource to parents to help their child through a difficult time,
- serve as a resource to teachers.
Who are School Counselors for?
Your School Counselor is here for EVERYONE! I am here for every student, every teacher, and every parent who is part of the James Fallon School community.
What type of things will the School Counselor be teaching my child?
FALL
The start of the new school year is a very exciting time. It can also be a stressful time for some. As a parent, you can provide your child with some patience and understanding. Listen to what they have to say, aknowledge their feelings, and reassure them that there are many people that are available to help them if they need it. Sometimes just a little reassurance is all it takes. In September, I will be working with all classes to re-introduce myself and explain the role of the counselor. I will let all students know that I am somone else that they can come to for help if they need it.
Throughout the year, we will be working as a school on the following themes:
October - Respect
November - Self Worth and Individuality
December - Integrity & Courage
January - Teamwork
February - Compassion & Acceptance
March - Citizenship
April - Responsibility
May - Resiliency
I will be teaching in every class once a month. All my classroom counseling lessons will revolve around the monthly theme. We will be expanding the Social Decision Making and Problem Solving curriculum from first grade into second grade this year. I will continue to introduce some of the main concepts to the other grades as well.
October 19th - 23rd is school Violence Awareness Week. Throughout the month, we will be doing many activities, lessons, and even assemblies around bullying and conflict resolution.
As always, please do not hesitate to call if I can be of assistance to you or your child (973) 633-3125 x 0. My door is always open.
