 We're Wild About Reading

My name is Carol Carter and I am a Reading Recovery/Reading Specialist at Joe K. Bryant Elementary.  I have been teaching for 21 years all in the Anna School District.  I have taught 1st grade, 2nd grade, Reading Recovery and 1st through 5th  literacy groups.  I live in Howe with my husband.  I have two grown children, and three grandchildren.  I love to read, shop, and have just started scrapbooking.  My husband and I love to travel, take our boat to the lake, and spend time with our family.  I hope to instill a love for books and reading into students that will last a lifetime.  I will be happy to answer any questions you have about my program.  Give me a call at 972-924-3353 or email me at ccarter@ednet10.net to set up a time for us to talk.

Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is a supplementary early intervention program designed for first graders who need help in reading and writing.  As a parent you can help your child by:

1.  Reading the three little books that come home with them each day.  The more times the books are read, the better your child will read.

2.  Your child will bring home a cut up story.  Have your child reassemble the story and read it to you.

3.  Sign parent log and return book bag with books each day.

As you listen to your child read give him/her 5-10 seconds of wait time instead of telling them the word or saying sound it out.  Ask questions or make statements such as:

Think about the story.        Go back and reread.

Make it look right.                 Make it sound right.

Check two ways (picture with word).

Does it make sense?

     Anna Reading Initiative (ARI)

Anna Reading Initiative (ARI) is a program designed to help students become more fluent in their reading and aquire strategies and better comprehension skills.

Readers Are Leaders

8 ways to become a better reader

1.  Read every day

2.  Read out loud with someone

3.  Read about things that you like

4.  Take a book with you wherever you go

5.  Read everything you can, like maps, menus, signs

newspapers, and magazines

6.  Talk about what you read

7.  Keep a log of what you read

8.  Be proud of your reading accomplishments

A master can tell you what he expects of you.  A

teacher, though, awakens your own expectations.
