Dear Parents,

If your child is on any medication such as an inhaler,or an allergy medication, that we may need here at school, please send in a dose that I can keep locked here in the clinic, to give if needed.  Sometimes our children with asthma or allergies come in from recess or P.E., hot and winded, needing their medication.

Make sure the medication you send in is labeled with student name, medication name, dosage amount, and frequency that it can be given.  If possible, send it in the original prescription bottle.  Sometimes you may want to ask your pediatrician for a spare prescription to be filled to have at school.

Also, parents of Jr. High students, be sure to send your child with a bottle of water on PE days, particularly while it is still so hot outside.

 LICE

TREATMENT

Several shampoos or rinses to kill head lice are on the market.  Some can be bought over-the-counter at local stores (such as RID, A-200, R&C, Nix Creme Rinse, Not Nice to Lice); others require a prescription (Ovide Lotion & Lindane).  A cream rinse product may be used in place of a shampoo.  There are also some safe home remedy treatments effective in treating lice.  Parents are urged to discuss the selection of any appropriate product with their physician, pharmacist, or school nurse.  ALL persons in the household, INCLUDING ADULTS, should be checked and treated, if necessary.  Consult a physician for an appropriate lice treatment plan for children under the age of two years, pregnant or nursing women, those with allergies, asthma, epilepsy, pre-existing medical conditions or lice on the eyebrows or eyelashes.

PROCEDURE

  1. Remove all clothing.
  2. Use shampoo or rinse AS DIRECTED on label. Note:  Many of these products are applied undiluted to dry hair.  (For home remedy instructions, contact the school nurse.)
  3. Rinse hair thoroughly with COOL water at a sink - not in the shower.
  4. Strip eggs/nits from hair by hair with a fine toothcomb.  ALL eggs/nits must be removed before a child may return to school.
  5. Put on clean clothes after shampooing.
  6. Repeat the procedure in 7-10 days.  Nix creme rinse may not need retreatment.
  7. Wash in HOT water ALL clothing, bed linens, towels, used by persons with lice.
  8. Soak combs and brushes in HOT water/bleach solution for 15 minutes.  CAUTION:  Heating may cause damage.
  9. Dry-clean ALL coats and hats that cannot be washed or put them in a hot clothes dryer for 20 minutes.  You can also seal such items, including stuffed animals, in a large plastic trash bag for 14 days in a place inaccessible to children.  All lice will die during this time.
  10. Vacuum ALL mattresses, pillows & chairs.  Insecticidal sprays can cause health problems and are NOT recommended.
  11. To prevent the spread of head lice, AVOID HEAD-TO-HEAD CONTACT; DO NOT share articles of clothing that come in contact with the head, neck, or shoulders.  Example:  combs, hats, coats, etc.

Treatment for lice usually takes at least one hour.  The child will be readmitted to school immediately after treatment is judged to be effective.  CAUTION:  Once a special shampoo or rinse is used correctly, ALL EGGS/NITS MUST BE REMOVED.  It will NOT loosen eggs to use the shampoo over and over again and it may DAMAGE the child's scalp and be potentially harmful to their health.  If you have any questions, please call the school nurse at (813) 899-6800.  Thank you for your cooperation.
