Hi First Grader!
Here is some information that we hope will make entering first grade a fun experience for you. If you will read this letter with your parents, you can share with them some of the things we will do and need during our first grade year.
Ask Mom or Dad to please label your outer clothing such as sweaters, coats, hats, boots, mittens, etc.
A nametag on the lunchbox, and other similar items is always helpful.
Tell Mom/Dad not to put your name on the outside of your clothing or lunchbox.
Your name could be read by a stranger that might use your name to make you think you know them.
Here are some items that we ask you not to send to school. They include: toys or expensive hand-held game systems, pencil sharpeners (oh, do they make a mess!), and "toy" (fancy) erasers.
When winter arrives, please wear boots, a hat, and mittens during ANY snowy weather.
We love to go for snow walks.
Please do not be concerned about your first day in school.
We will do everything together and slowly: you don't know how to do certain things yet, and we are too old to do them fast!
We will make sure you get on the right bus, or find your parents or car pool at the end of the school day.
You will be surprised how easy starting first grade can be.
Your birthday is a very special day.
Cupcakes or treats are welcome in our classroom, if you want to share your birthday (or unbirthday if you were born during the summer) with your classmates (and teacher!!). Please avoid foods containing dark chocolate or large nuts (no allergy, but a choking hazard).
Please tell your Mom or Dad that if they have special instructions for your teacher, to please put these in writing for the first day of school.
The first day of school is a very busy day and it is difficult to remember things told to us, while trying to organize the rest of the class.
During the summer would you please memorize your first and last name, phone number and your home address?
This is for health and safety purposes.
It would also be helpful if you could practice typing your full first and last name on the computer. (No nicknames, type Robert not Bobby.)
Finally, first grade is a very special beginning for us.
We will give out phone numbers where we can be reached closer to the start of school, in case you have any questions or concerns.
Our school number is (610)-938-6500.
On KYW (1060 AM) radio, the emergency closing number is 526.
Also the Springfield School District has a channel on Suburban Cable, Channel 11, which will also broadcast any emergency closings.
This is going to be a super school year!
We will travel together through first grade, taking time to meet new friends, and have many new experiences.
Each week we will have gym, art, music, and time in the library to pick a good book to read.
We will spend time with our classroom computers, and some time in the computer lab.
Learning is what we are all about and something we can all look forward to and enjoy.
