Dear Parents and students,
The instrumental music staff of the
Springfield
elementary schools would like to inform you of the opportunity your child will have to begin the study of a band instrument in fourth grade.
(This is not to be confused with the flutophone experience to which all children are exposed in the third grade).
We thought that perhaps a few comments would help to better inform you of our instrumental music program.
Free lessons are offered during school hours and instruments are loaned free of charge for one year.
Purchase of instruction books and supplies (such as reeds, valve oil, etc.) by parents however, is necessary.
When selecting and instrument for a child, there are several elements to be considered --- physical characteristics of the child, individual musical ability, band instrumentation, and availability of instruments.
Once a child begins a particular instrument, s/he will continue with that instrument in the school program unless a change is suggested by the music teacher.
To become proficient, on a musical instrument requires practice.
Each child is expected to practice 30 minutes a day.
Band instruction begins in September for fourth graders.
Band rehearsals (before school ) begin in January and continue through concert season (spring).
There will be an evening concert for parents and two concert assemblies at the elementary schools.
Students will be chosen for band instruction on the basis of musical aptitude, achievement, motivation and responsibility demonstrated in flutophone class.
Only children who show good effort and responsibility in flutophone class will be eligible for free lessons on a band instrument.

Fourth Grade Band Rehearsals are every Monday and Wednesday mornings at Scenic Hills beginning at 7:55 AM to 8:35AM.
