It is important not to give away too many details when you are telling someone the main idea of a story.
The main idea should include important information like characters, setting, problem and solution.
For example, the story is mostly about a pig that falls asleep in a watermelon patch.
Many animals try to wake him up, but the cricket is the only one that can get the pig to wake up!

How to play Penny Nickel Dime Exchange
Partners put 20 pennies, 10 nickels and 5 dimes in a pile.
Each player rolls a die and collects the number of pennies shown on the die.
(If you don’t have a die, you can use a number spinner from a board game or a deck of cards and just use the numbers on the cards.) When players have at least 5 pennies, they exchange their pennies for a nickel! When players have two nickels, they exchange two nickels for a dime!
We set up a “bank” with pennies, nickels and dimes.
Continue playing until all coins are collected by players. Players count combination of coins - player with the most money WINS!
Practice and have fun!!!!!
REMEMBER TO PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

-
Bring 100 Book Challenge Packet to school each day

They are sent home as we begin a new Theme in our reading program (usually every 3-4 weeks).
Each theme has three books for each week.
-
Check the Homework sheet for Theme/Week readings.
For example, read books for Theme 1/Week 3; highlight words that belong to the –at, -an, -it, -ig word families; color the pictures; retell the story to someone at home.
-
Check the Homework sheet for additional high frequency word practice.
In addition to green, blue and yellow high frequency words, your child will bring home the high frequency words we are working on in class.
Please practice these words each week.
The Theme and Week can be found at the top of each word page.
Reading/Comprehension Strategies
Strategies are plans that help us understand what we read.
Strategy Instruction
- Good readers use strategies to help them comprehend what they read. These are the strategies that we will focus on this year:
Ø Making Connections - (text to text, text to self, and text to world) Readers pay more attention when they relate to the text. Readers naturally bring their prior knowledge and experience to reading, but they comprehend better when they think about the connections they make between the text, their lives and the larger world.
Ø Asking Questions - Questioning is the strategy that keeps readers engaged. When readers ask questions, they clarify understanding and make meaning. Asking questions is at the heart of thoughtful reading.
Ø Visualizing - Active readers create visual images in their minds based on words they read in text. The pictures they create enhance their understanding.
Ø Making Inferences - Inferring is the intersection of taking what is known, garnering clues from the text, and thinking ahead to make judgment, discern a theme or speculate about what is to come.
Ø Identifying Important Ideas - Thoughtful readers grasp essential ideas and important information when reading. Readers must differentiate between less important ideas and key ideas that are central to the meaning.
Ø Synthesizing Information - Synthesizing involves combining new information with existing knowledge to form an original idea or interpretation. Reviewing, sorting, and sifting important information can lead to new insights that change the way readers think.
Ø Monitor and Repair Understanding - If confusion disrupts meaning, readers need to stop and clarify their understanding. Readers may use a variety of strategies to "fix up" comprehension when meaning goes awry.

REMINDERS:
Dress for the Weather - The cold weather is upon us! The children go outside for recess - so please dress them for the weather (coats, hats, gloves, mittens, etc.)
.
Take Home Books/Theme High Frequency Words

Please continue to read books and review words for Theme 4-Week 1 throughout this week. These books and words reinforce what the children are learning in the classroom.
The children can color the pictures and highlight sight words and words that belong to the –at, -an, -it, –ig, -ot , -ox , -et, -en, -ug , –ut – ack, –ap, -ick , -ill, -ip and -in word families.
They should keep them at home and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.
Zip Cards-
These cards help with reading fluency and high frequency word recognition.
The cards are the first 100 high frequency words in small sentences or phrases.
Practice along with high frequency words.
High Frequency Words – If anyone is interested in an extra copy of the "colored" words please write a note and send in with your child.
An extra set of words will enable you to play games like Memory or Concentration or Fish with your child.
You might also want to keep one set in the car and the other at home.
