100 Book Challenge – This is our Reading At Home/School program that was discussed on Curriculum Night.   Your child will read 100 Book Challenge books for 15 minutes each night and you will sign/initial one step (block) in the Reading Log.   Four books will come home each day and four books need to be returned the following day.   The books will be FUN, FAST & EASY!   Remember - This is your child’s independent reading level.   We will begin sending books home on Monday, October 6th.

Lunch Pin Numbers ~ please make sure your child has memorized their pin number!   Please help with menu selections.   The first selection on the menu is platter 1; second - platter 2; third – platter 3. For example, today’s menu – Platter 1 – Fish Sticks;   Platter 2 – Turkey and Cheese Sandwich;   Platter 3 – Hot Dog.

High Frequency Words ~ The first 100 high frequency words and word rings went home.   A letter was attached from the first grade team.

Red Folder ~ please make sure your child has their red folder EVERY day.   It is important that they bring this folder home and back to school each day.   Please check the folder for important papers and student work   Please place any notes or important papers in this Red Folder.

 Pretzel Day ~ every Thursday – 25 cents/pretzel.

Field trip to Woodland Park ~ We will take our first field trip on  Thursday, October 16, 2008 .   We will be walking through Woodland Park (behind E.T. Richardson Middle School ).   Our class will be joining Mrs. Guellich’s and Miss Connor’s  first grade class for the field trip.   The other first grade classes will be going on a different day.   Please dress your child appropriately for the weather that day.   Please return permission forms as soon as possible.

Dismissal Changes ~ if your child is going home in a way that is different from their normal routine,

please send a note.

Scholastic Book Orders – If you would like to order any books, please send in a check made payable to Scholastic Book Club by Friday, October 3rd.

Reading – We are reading every day!   We are using strategies to help us understand what we read.   We have practiced Visualizing, Making Connections and Making Inferences.

Word Work – We are practicing beginning and ending sounds of words; word families (-at, -an, -it, ig).   We are also practicing our high frequency words each day!

Writing – We are writing every day.   We are using rubrics to help us check our writing for good spaces between words, capitals at the beginning of each sentence; periods at the end of each sentence.

Math – Numbers are everywhere! Children can practice counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.   They can count orally, count objects, tallies, pennies, etc.   They can also use objects to make up number stories. (4 horses were eating hay outside on the farm; 2 cows came outside to eat hay too.   How many animals are outside eating hay?)

Reading/Comprehension Strategies

Strategies are plans that help us understand what we read.

Strategy Instruction - Good readers use strategies to help them comprehend what they read.  These are the strategies that we will focus on this year:

Ø Making Connections - (text to text, text to self, and text to world)  Readers pay more attention when they relate to the text. Readers naturally bring their prior knowledge and experience to reading, but they comprehend better when they think about the connections they make between the text, their lives and the larger world.

Ø Asking Questions - Questioning is the strategy that keeps readers engaged.  When readers ask questions, they clarify understanding and make meaning.  Asking questions is at the heart of thoughtful reading.

Ø Visualizing - Active readers create visual images in their minds based on words they read in text.  The pictures they create enhance their understanding.

Ø Making Inferences - Inferring is the intersection of taking what is known, garnering clues from the text, and thinking ahead to make judgment, discern a theme or speculate about what is to come.

Ø Identifying Important Ideas - Thoughtful readers grasp essential ideas and important information when reading.  Readers must differentiate between less important ideas and key ideas that are central to the meaning.

Ø Synthesizing Information - Synthesizing involves combining new information with existing knowledge to form an original idea or interpretation.  Reviewing, sorting, and sifting important information can lead to new insights that change the way readers think.

Ø Monitor and Repair Understanding - If confusion disrupts meaning, readers need to stop and clarify their understanding.  Readers may use a variety of strategies to "fix up" comprehension when meaning goes awry.

How to play Penny Nickel Exchange

Partners put 20 pennies and 10 nickels in a pile.   Each player rolls a die and collects the number of pennies shown on the die.   (If you don’t have a die, you can use a number spinner from a board game or a deck of cards and just use the numbers on the cards.) Whenever players have at least 5 pennies, they trade in their pennies for a nickel!   We usually set up a “bank” with pennies and nickels.

Please note that as we begin to work with dimes that the Penny-Nickel-Dime Exchange is played the same way with pennies, nickels and dimes.

Practice and have fun!!!!!
