Notes and Reminders

 

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

     As we get ready to begin our 100 Book Challenge for our students I want to remind you of a few key points.

 

  • The books will be EASY!!!!
  • The books will be fun!!!
  • STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO READ EACH NIGHT AND HAVETHEIR READING LOG SIGNED.

 

Remember you are your child’s reading coach. If you have not returned the contract, please return the signed l00 Book Challenge Contract to me as soon as possible.   We have started 100 Book Challenge in class and will continue to practice before we start at home.   We know that the students will be so excited to have their books and Reading Logs that will come home soon.

Please send in a 3 ring notebook with 1'' rings for our poetry books.

 

Please send in a plastic pencil/crayon box with a lid.

Dear Parents,

We hope that you had a safe and happy summer and are just as excited, as we are to begin a new school year!   We are confident that first grade will be a positive learning experience for your child.

 

It would be helpful if your child brings in the following supplies beginning on Friday , September 8, 2006

*       1 backpack or book bag to carry books and papers between school and home.   Please label this with your child’s name and how they will be getting home.

*       An old clean sock (to wipe off math slates).

*       1 large box of tissues to share with the class (cold season is right around the corner).

*       1 box of snacks such as mini cookies, small pretzels or crackers to be shared with the class for hungry tummies and math fun.

*       A smock for art projects (labeled with their name).

*       1 container of pump soap for hand washing for boys.

*       1 container of hand sanitizer (Purell for example) for girls

*       1 box of thick markers

*       1 box of colored pencils- already sharpened please!

*       2 durable pocket folder to be used in class (no clasps on the inside please)

*       2 glue sticks

*       1 thick yellow highlighter

*       2 black marble copybooks

*       1 box of Ticonderoga #2 pencils already sharpened please!

*       1 roll of paper towels

*       1 box gallon sized zip lock bags for girls

*       1 container Clorox wipes for boys

*       1 set of headphones for the computer lab to prevent the spread of lice.

 

Please mark your child’s supplies clearly with their name .   If you have already purchased additional supplies, please keep them at home.   They may be useful for homework assignments.    

           

We look forward to meeting you on Curriculum Night.   Thank you for your help in getting this year off to a great start!

·       100 Book Challenge Books” will come home each night.     This will start later in the month.   These books are meant to be read and reread multiple times.   Students are required to read 15 minutes per night.   These books are meant to be fun and easy.   Remember parents/reading coach needs to sign the Reading Log page where it says “home.”   This practice will support independent reading.  

 

 

·        Vocabulary Cards -The words on these cards are the words that go with our Houghton Mifflin reading series.   They can be practiced along with the  purple sight words.
 

 

 

·       Phonics Library -     We will be sending home “take home” books that focus on the phonics skills we’re doing in class.   These books are to be kept at home.   They may be read and reread.

 

 

     

 

 We have finished our homework for the year!!!!  Of course, I know that you will continue to read at home!  You are such good readers!!!!!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

               Remember you are to read 15 minutes each night.   15 minutes is ONE STEP .    You will probably have to read your books more than once.   Practice…Practice…Practice……….

Remember that you will need to fill in your Reading Log by logging ONE step. Color in JUST ONE BLOCK just like we do at school. Please have your parents initial your log on the block that you’ve colored in.

 

 

Remember to RETURN YOUR BOOKS EVERY DAY!!!!!

 

 

We are beginning to work on math facts.   Please read Home Link 2.3.   This is one way to practice.   Another way is to roll 2 dice and “add up” what comes up.   We have been working on “doubles facts” to with numbers to 10.   1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, 9+9 and 10+10. 100 Book Challenge                 

 

·        100 Book Challenge        Remember that only one lblock of the Reading Log is to be filled in each night.   We know that the students are reading all of their books each evening!   Only one block needs to be filled in on the Log.    The importance is the time spent reading.   Remember to sign the Reading Logs.

  Independent reading is an important part of our students’ Balanced Literacy Program.   When children read independently, they can easily read the words and they understand what they are reading.    

 

                                

 

 

Reading Log Information

 

 

The students are required to read for 15 minutes each night.

 

They are to fill in one block.    

Each block of the Reading Log represents ONE 15 minute session.

 

 

Parents/guardians are to initial the block that the student has filled in.

Readers Read at Their Independent Reading Levels

 

 

At independent reading levels, students:

 

 

 

·       Can use what they know to figure out the few hard words by themselves.

·       Are engaged for long periods of time.

·       Want to do it again.

·       Can tell you what they’ve learned from their reading.

·       Laugh at the funny parts.

·       Read with expression.

·       Are relaxed, comfortable, and having fun.

·       Get into the habit of fluency, understanding and success.
