  Homework TIPS
Homework will require some parental involvement at this level. Your
cooperation is essential in developing a positive homework habit. First and foremost, you can encourage your child by showing interest and demonstrating helpful attitudes toward homework.
Some additional suggestions for homework:
· Provide a noise-free, well-lit place to work.
· Establish a regular “homework time” in the home and have a special place free from excessive noise.
· Help your child organize adequate time to complete activities neatly and carefully.
· Decide if it becomes too frustrating of a task to stop and take a break. Any work done under duress or frustration is not a positive or healthy learning experience.

WORD STUDY

Word Study is instruction in phonics, spelling, and vocabulary. The purpose of word study is to teach students to examine words to discover the regularities, patterns, and conventions of English orthography need to read and spell. Word study increases specific knowledge of words-the spelling and meaning of individual words.

Word sorting is the heart of word study. Word sorts help students organize what they know about words and to form generalizations that they can then apply to new words they encounter in their reading. as students progress through the stages of reading and spelling, they learn how to look at words differently. Word sorting offers the best of both constructivist learning and teacher-directed instruction.

Through word sorting we allow children to learn "words their way." This means that we teach students at their developmental or instructional level, and that students' learning is based on the way they are naturally inclined to learn, on their natural course of conceptual learning.

*This information about word study is based on more than three decades of research in developmental aspects of word knowledge with children and adults. Word study also comes from what we have learned about the orthographic (sequence of letters, or spelling) structure of written words.
