WELCOME TO ADVENTURES IN LITERACY!!

This site will explain the Springfield School District's Literacy program and all the pieces that work together to help make your child successful in developing his or her literacy development. In Springfield School District we work under the philosophy of providing your child with a Balanced and Comprehensive Literacy Program. This means that we present all the key elements of a successful literacy program.

THE PARTS OF A BALANCED AND COMPREHENSIVE LITERACY PROGRAM

The purpose of this section is to provide you wth an introductory outline to the parts of a balanced, comprehensive literacy program. More detailed information on each of these ideas will be provided in updates to this website that will be made throughout the year.

  • Development of Comprehension: The main purpose of reading is to understand what the author is saying. Comprehension can be at the Literal Level which means that the child can discuss the facts and details making up the story or the nonfiction text. Comprehension can be at the Interpretive Level which means that the child needs to figure out what the author is saying.
  • Reading Fluently: An effective reader reads fluently using expression, phrasing, and punctuation to guide their understanding of what the author is saying. The current research is showing a strong link between fluent reading and comprehension. In the Flashcard section of this webpage (Sections 1, 2, and 3) there are phrases provided that will allow your child to practice reading groups of words in phrases that will encourage the development of fluent reading.
