Breaking News!!  You can now access Kidbiz (www.kidbiz3000.com) and Study Island (www.studyisland.com) from your computer at home to enjoy these fabulous websites.  Please use the sites at least twice a week at home.

       *** !00 Book Challenge! ***

Each night students bring home one or more books at their reading level.  It is important that each book is on their independent recreational reading level so that it is fun, fast and easy to read (if you feel the books are too challenging, please let me know). Each block of 15 minutes students read counts as one step, which means that each night they will earn 2 steps.  Parents, we really appreciate your signing their reading log so that they earn the steps.  Thank you!

The books are very interesting and fun to read, so we hope parents and students are enjoying them; we have found a lot of books which add to our curriculum topics.

Students who are reading at their "just right level":

  • Can use what they know to figure out the few hard words by themselves.

  • Are engaged for long periods of time.

  •  Want to do it again.

  • Can tell you what they’ve learned from their reading.

  • Laugh at the funny parts.

  • Read with expression.

  • Are relaxed, comfortable, and having fun.

  • Get into the habit of fluency, understanding and success.

  • Learn to read by reading.

                                        Our Daily Schedule:

Monday:  Gym (sneakers please)

Tuesday:   Guidance /  LMC  (books please)

Wednesday: Art (smocks please)

Thursday:  Computers and Health or Chorus

Friday:   Music

Please bring in a smock for Art, an old shirt or long -sleeved T-shirt will be fine.  For gym please make sure to dress comfortably and suitably, with pants or shorts, and sneakers are a must!

               Homework

We will write our assignments each day in the assignment books.  Parents, please check this each day, and sign the book so that I know you have seen it.  It is each student's job to bring the book to you with a pen and ask nicely for it to be signed!  If there is a problem, please write a note in the assignment book to let me know.  Our usual ongoing assignments are listed below, if there are special projects, I will add them to this information.

                                                    Reading:

Each night read for 30 minutes.  Write the title on your 100 Book Reading Log and ask your parents to sign your two steps.  I'm looking forward to hearing about the books you are reading.  Enjoy your reading time!  Remember, reading 100 Book Challenge books will count for the 30 minutes and will count as 2 steps!

                                                 Spelling:

Monday:  Words are written in alphabetical order on the front sheet of the spelling packet.

Tuesday: A spelling practice book page, and study words.

Wednesday:  Words which are mis-spelled on the Wednesday pretest are written on

the missed words page in the spelling packet.

              A spelling practice book page.

Thursday:  Finish all the pages in the spelling packet.  Study the words for the Friday test!

Friday:  No homework!  Have a great weekend!

                                                Math

Each day we will do a page to reinforce the skill we have learned in our math lesson; mostly this will be a Study Link page, but sometimes it will be a different paper.  Please check the assignment book for the details.

It is very important for each student to know math facts, so please practice them every night.

School Supply Letter

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to our Fourth Grade classroom!  It is going to be an exciting year, working with all of you, we will share so many terrific experiences!  There are some items you can bring which will help to make the year run smoothly.

Things we need for the classroom:

1.   A bookbag - please bring a SMALL one since our cubby space is VERY limited. You will not

have large books to take home.

2.  A pocket-folder to ensure that papers arrive home in good condition.   Please check

the  folder every day!   Our space is very limited so please keep large three ring binders

    at home.

3. Two LARGE boxes of tissues - we will share them throughout the year.

4. Colored pencils for map work.

5. One odorless dry-erase marker for student white boards.

6. A hard cover “marble” composition book for Math.

7. A glue-stick.

8. A yellow highlighter marker.

9. It is not essential, but if a pencil container is wanted, please do not use boxes, as our desks

are too small.   Instead, use a flexible zipper pencil pouch - the kind which will fit in a three

    ring binder.

10. Clear contact plastic to cover two workbooks which will be used all year.

11. Each day we will have a time for a nutritious snack since lunchtime is late. Fruit,

vegetables, crackers or pretzels would be appropriate, please do not bring candy, chocolate

     or sugary items.

If there is a problem with any of these items, please let me know,  there will be a few days to get all of these things together.  If all the items are marked with names it will be so much easier to keep organized.  If you have purchased additional supplies, please keep them at home, they will be needed for homework and our space in school is very limited.

If you have any questions please leave a message at the office, send a note, or come to see me before or after school,   I’ll be happy to help.

                                                Sincerely,

                                                D. Bastable

Some Super Things We've done This Year

Making our Great Pumpkin Globes

What a lot of work it was to make our pumpkin globes, but they turned out beautifully!  First we cut out maps, next we had to make the lines of latitude and longitude on the pumpkin very carefully.  When we placed the maps correctly on the pumpkins, we had to trace them, then finally it was time to paint!  Whew!  It was a lot to do, but it was worth it.

A Fantastic Day on Ride the Ducks in Philadelphia:

We had a great day in Philadelphia, saw lots of super sights, and were thrilled with the ride on the Duck Boats. We quacked a lot and heard so much interesting information about all the places we had studied in Social Studies. We had learned a lot about the Titanic in Language Arts, and then we saw the liner, the United States, from the Delaware River!  On the way back to school our bus driver took us on Interstate 95 from where we could see the United States, the  ocean liner is like the Titanic, but smaller.   We believe it is waiting to be renovated; if you are going on I-95 look out for it. We were hoping to visit the Benjamin Franklin Court where he had a house, post office, and print shop.  Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and we had to return early to Sabold.  We did see the Court from the Duck and now that everyone knows where it is, please visit the Court with parents and see all the amazing sights - the printing press is an amazing machine.

Thank you so much to our chaperones who gave up their time to come with us, we could not take these trips without you!
