Welcome to Mrs. App's Class

Correction: Our Math Test is this Thursday, June 5th (not the 11th as stated below). This is the only change to the site.

News & Notes from Room 28

Hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! We appreciate our Veterans and all of our military who serve for our country!

Field Trip: Wednesday, June 4th. Send a lunch and a beach towel. We will be eating in Pennsdale Park , reading for a short time, and having a short recess (weather permitting) after our visit to the Springfield Highway Department. Mr. Bob Artese will be showing the kids how traffic lights work and telling them how ice is made at the Springfield Skating Club. Mr. Artese has a great rapport with the kids and they always hang on every word he says!

Reminder : Pictures or Money (or combo) due!

Brrrr ….Yes, we are soooo lucky to have air conditioning. We turn the air on and off throughout the day to keep it nice and comfortable. PLEASE, send in a long t-shirt, sweatshirt or something your child could keep handy if goosebumps appear. Some kids request more a.c. while others may feel chilly so this will help us all be more comfortable. Also, there is no water fountain in the modular. Please send in a small water bottle daily for your thirsty, parched child. Thank you!!

Sabold Images: The gallery showing of Sabold Images was wonderful! I’m so glad that so many of you had a chance to walk through at the Open House. Special thanks to Mrs. Enderle who took our kids around to photograph sites and sights around Sabold.

Math: The lesson on sharing money that we did last week is always a difficult one. I teach this lesson using play money. We exchange large money amounts for smaller bills and change so the money can be divided evenly. When we have our test on this unit (June 11th), I will set money stations up around the room for the kids to use when working out the money problems. This has always worked well in the past and the kids get used to “exchanging money at the bank”.

Dinnertime Table Talk:

  • Multiplication Rotation
  • Cloud Men, a purple Centipede, and  the gloomy Earthworm
  • Planting flowers outside

TEXT ANXIETY:  Third grade is the start of text anxiety for some children.  Please help your child through this by:

  1. Helping them prepare for tests.  This helps them feel in control of the situation.
  2. Stress "Do your very best" not "You must get an A"
  3. Prepare ahead of time for tests, quizzes and assignments.  The last minute marathon method usually raises stress levels.
  4. Use flashcards and mnemonic devices to memorize facts.
  5. Have a quiet place to study and do homework.
  6. Having a routine in place at home that will help a child with time management.
  7. Talk about it.  Discuss with them what they can do to relieve some of the anxiety.
  8. Make the teacher aware of the situation.  Sometimes a quick chat,one-on-one, can really help.

Homework Assignments

Many of our homework assignments will become part of our weekly routine. Please check your child's homework assignment book daily for specific assignments and reminders. Please sign the assignment book every day! Thank you!

 General Homework Assignments

Reading: Your child must read for two steps (30 min.) and record both steps in the 100 Book Challenge Reading Log. Please sign the log each time your child reads!

Writing: Some writing assignments may be sent home. If they are marked "On Your Own", please do not help your child with them. Occasionally, classroom writing pieces may have to be finished at home or edited with an adult if the writing was not completed in the time given during class.

Spelling and Vocabulary - The spelling and vocabulary lists for each story are located in the yellow booklet given to each student. Occasionally, there will be weeks when there is no new vocabulary list, just a spelling list. This will be noted in your child's homework assignment book. Students work on the vocabulary assignment during class time. Most students complete it by Wednesday. Any unfinished vocabulary becomes homework on Thursday evening. Spelling and Vocabulary tests are usually given on Mondays.

Monday  - write each word 3 times each

                     Tuesday -Houghton Mifflin Practice Page

                     Wednesday - Another practice page

Thursday - Finish any uncompleted vocabulary work.

Friday - study for the spelling and vocabulary test on Monday

Handwriting: Occasional assignments may be given.

MathA page is assigned each night in the HomeLinks. Study guides  and a list of helpful pages in the SRB (Student Reference Book - a parent's best friend) and handed out for each unit. Always keep practicing your math facts!!!!!

Social Studies & Science: Assignments are given as needed throughout each unit. Study guides are provided for the tests. Classroom participation is an important factor in grading. Requirements for projects or long-term assignments are given in advance and must be signed by parents so that I know you are aware of them.

Weekend Homework: I do not assign any new homework on the weekends except for reading 6 steps over the weekend (30 min. per day for Fri., Sat., and Sun. = 90 min. total; may be completed any time during the weekend). I will be working up to the 6 steps gradually. Students who have been absent will have time to make up assignments.
