100 Book Challenge -- READ     READ     READ

Please remember to sign the log sheet each night!

Students should be reading 10 steps per week in school and at least 10 steps per week at home!  One step equals 15 minutes of reading.  This is a total of 20 steps per week.

Your child should be on step 76 by Monday, September 29th!

LANGUAGE ARTS

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Currently, we are focusing on team building activities, learning to use our writer's notebook, and active reading.  We are also engaging in book talks around our summer reading experiences.  Over the next few weeks, students will be involved in several reading and writing assessments.  These are not a part of their grades for the course; rather, they give us a better understanding of how each student is performing as a reader and writer.

Our first reading theme of the year is COURAGE.  Students will read fiction and non-fiction stories about courageous people and/or acts.  The reading strategies covered during our first reading round include predicting, noting important details, and making connections.  Students will read independently or in small groups and focus on utilizing these skills as they read.

Students will write in the writer's notebooks almost everyday for the next few weeks.  They will respond to read alouds or quotes related to our courage theme and have free write time.  In mid-October and into November, they will write a piece related to courage.

HOMEWORK

Homework will be assigned approximately 2-3 times per week.  Homework completion is a part of the Language Arts grade.  Each assignment is worth 5 points.  When homework is completed on time, students receive the full 5 points.  If a student does not have their assignment in class at their desk when I am walking around to check, they will lose the 5 points for that assignment.  It is the student's responsibility to show me the assignment the next day.

WHEN THREE OR MORE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS ARE MISSED AND NEVER SHOWN TO ME, YOUR CHILD WILL BE INVITED TO ATTEND AN AFTER SCHOOL OR LUNCH HOMEWORK SESSION (a paper will come home for you to sign).  THE SESSION IS FOR YOUR CHILD TO CATCH UP AND COMPLETE THE MISSING ASSIGNMENTS.

FINAL THOUGHT:  Make each day your masterpiece.
