It is the goal of this class to provide all ninth grade students with a solid academic foundation upon which they can build and to equip students with the tools necessary for achievement in all their academic subjects. The class will focus on three major areas of study:   study skills, the writing process, and research.   During the study skills unit, students will investigate the various learning styles and diagnose their own learning strengths and weaknesses; they will also work on such skills as goal setting, organization, and note-taking.   Throughout the semester, students will independently build writing and reading skills through a program entitled Study Island .   For the writing portion of the course, students will keep a Writer’s Notebook, review/learn the five-paragraph-essay format, compose three fully-developed papers in various writing modes, and practice each stage of the writing process.   Finally, the students will complete an extensive research unit, during which they will investigate a topic of interest, create a research paper and present their findings to the class.
