Family and Consumer Sciences - Mrs. Ferguson - Room "A"
6th Grade - 1st term - Project is a small pillow hand designed by the student.
Course Outline: Friendship - Students will work on worksheets and play a game in class.
Hand sewing - Students will design and hand sew a pillow top.
Students are required to bring in $1.00 for pillow supplies.
Machine sewing - Students will learn how to operate a sewing machine and complete their pillow project.
Community service - Students will learn the importance of community service and possibly make a wheelchair/walker bag to be donated to a local senior citizen's center.
7th Grade - 1st term - Project is a backpack or drawstring bag.
Course Outline - Fabric review - review types of fabrics in order for students to bring in their backpack supplies.
Students are required to bring in their own supplies.See list below.
1.Fabric - 1/2" yard or 18" of a woven fabric. Students will receive a
swatch of the correct fabric type. Note, students should not
use a fabric that has STRETCH. The best type of fabic is a
100% cotton or poly/cotton blend.
2.Cording -4 yards of flat cording. Cording should measure 1/4"-1/2"
in thickness.
3. Thread - 1 spool of poly/cott. Be sure the spool lists "ALL Purpose"on top.
Students must have supplies in by the due date as noted.
Child development - Students will learn the four basic needs of young children while completing a poster in class. Students will learn how young children learn through play and complete a toy evalution. Students will also review a child's story book and complete a short book review. Students will learn what precautions to take when babysitting to keep children safe.
Machine sewing - Students will review machine sewing while making a back pack. Backpack completion date will be as discussed in class.
8th Grade - 1st term - Project is a memory pillow.
Course Outline - Fabric review - Review types of fabrics in order for students to purchase pillow supplies.
Students are required to bring in their own supplies. See list below.
1. Fabric - 3/4 yard of a woven fabric. Note Fabric should not have any stretch.
2. Fusible interfacing - 1/2 yard of fusible interfacing. This can be found at
Joann Fabrics behind the cutting counter. Customers must ask for it.
3. T-shirt - Students should consider using a t-shirt that they have out grown
and are ready to give up. The teacher will explain further in class.
Students must have supplies in by the due date.
4. Poly-fil Stuffing - one 12 oz. bag of pillow stuffing.
Machine sewing - Students will review machine sewing techniques and make a t-shirt pillow. This project will teach the students how to use an iron and how to block fuse inter-facing to the back of their design. The students will also learn how to complete pattern layout, cut fabric, and sew 4/8" seam allowances.
Poject completion date is as discussed in class.
Fashion Design - Students will learn the history of fashion as well as how a fashion style becomes popular.
Advertising - Students will learn the basic advertising techniques used by companies to get consumers to buy their products.
Consumer Economics - Students will learn to how to make right choices when shopping. Students will design an original hangtag and care label to coordinate with their pillow project.
