Course Overview and Homework Assignment
Grade 6 Keyboarding 6 Weeks Cycle Cycle 4 1/23/09 to 3/6/09
The primary focus is to learn how to keyboard as well as developing good health habits at the computer. You will have six weeks to learn how to touch keyboard. To develop good health habits at the computer, you need to focus on keyboarding techniques--feet flat on floor, back straight, fingers in home row position, fingers curved, palms off keyboarding, and eyes on copy. Remember it is HOW you keyboarding; not speed. The second and final technique evaluation will be this week.
To become proficient user of the computer, daily practice is required; students should practice 20 mins. each week night. Daily practice sheets are available in class. A letter will be sent home with students outlining the practice log. Please get log sheet signed by parent to verify that you practice 20 mins. using proper keyboarding techniques. Log sheets can be downloaded from this web page; scroll down and select the file.
In addition, proofreader's marks will be introduced and practiced in class. Activity sheets will be given in class to complete.
Homework Assignments:
Since developing strong keyboarding skills takes practice and practice, you will need to practice every weeknight for 20 mins. Daily practice sheets are given in class. Please remember to record each practice session on the practice log sheet given in class. Log sheet will be collected and checked most Fridays. Practice log is worth 100 pts. (20% of grade)
NOTE: If you do not have a word processing program at home such as Word or WordPerfect, you can use notepade or wordpad under the accessories options. Click the Start button, select Accessories, scroll down and select Notepad or WordPad.
Grade 7--Word Processing Cycle 4 1/23/09 to 3/6/09
During the six week cycle, you will learn word processing features using Word as well as learning how to format one-page reports, multi-page (research) reports and business letters. In addtion, you will work on developing speed and accuracy in keyboarding skills.
After complete the one-page report and multi-page assignments, you will begin to complete the I-Search project by properly formatting using the MLA (Modern Language Association) standards.
Proofreading assignments will also be completed in class as well as composing activities at the computer.
Homework Assignments: If you are behind in class, please come to help class to stay up-to-date on all assignments.
Grade 7--Computer Cycle II--Second Semester 1/19/09 to 4/2/09
Students will have a basic understand key concepts of entreprenuership. They will explore different entreprenuer web sites. In addition, students will research one famous entreprenuer and create a one page typed report (using MLA standards).
Students will continue with the desktop publishing business simulation called, "Frillio's Pizza." Students will be in business for themselves as a desktop publisher; they will learn how to create various documents using MS Word as a desktop publisher. Students are required to complete the following assignments by the end of cycle: headlines, logos, letterhead, business card, placemat and coupon flyer.
In addition to Frillio's assignments, students will review and practice their keyboarding skills.

Course Description
Fall Semester (9/3/09 to 1/16/09)
During the fall semester, students will understand the importance of career planning. First, students will complete surveys on what they know about working and career planning. Next, students will randomly select an occupation profile without considering their talents, abilities, interests and/or skills. What might happen if there is no career planning?
With career planning, students can understanding their career choices available to them as well as making better career decisions. Students will be presented with various information through a unit called "Preparing for Your Journey--PYJ" with notesheets. Then, they will begin several career assessments--Self-assessment Survey, Career Cluster Survey and the Holland Code--SDS Research. After completing these assessments, students will create an occupation list of occupations they have an interest in exploring and researching. Once students briefly explore occupations from their list using various resources, they will select one occupation to research and explore for the third marking period culminating project.
The final activity for the first semester, students will complete an on-line career planning web sites www.educationplanner.org and www.pacareerzone.org
Spring Semester (1/19/09 to 6/12/09)
Students will select one occupation from their list and research the occupation. Guided note sheets are provided. Then, they will present information either in a slide show or brochure. Next, students will participate in a class "career fair" and have opportunity to explore other occupations from their peers. The semester will conclude with a job application unit. They will understand Child Labor Laws, "working paper" and tips on completing an application form.
