3rd Grade Dual Language-English

Language Arts:
Our language arts program is created by Houghton Mifflin, the same program that students used in second grade. Our materials are divided into 6 major themes, with each theme consisting of 3-4 stories and a reading/writing workshop. Each theme has a different focus. Our current theme (theme 1) is titles Off to Adventure and focuses on "adventure" type stories that are both fiction and nonfiction. At the end of each theme, all students will take a theme test in which they will show what they learned about the theme topic, comprehension, grammar, a particular reading strategy, and writing to a related prompt. There are smaller quizzes that are taken at the end of each story, as benchmarks to assess how students are doing as they progress through the theme. The scores on these tests and quizzes will be shared at your student's conferences.
In the Dual Language classes, there are two 60 minute language arts blocks. All students attend one 60 minute block in English and one 60 minute block in Spanish. Students are only tested in their dominant language at the end of a theme.
MATH
Mathematics in the Dual Language program is only in English. Students have 75 minutes of math every day. This year in math, your child will work on 9 major units. Our first unit focuses on addition and subtraction of double digit numbers, place value (ones and tens) and couting money. This unit will be tested around the end of September. All test scores in math will be shared with parents at conference time too.
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES
Science and social studies are taught to all students in Spanish. Students have 60 minutes a day of either science or social studies. In science, students will study three major units, Plant Growth and Development, Rocks and Minerals, and Sun, Moon and Stars. All class work related to the the unit is done in a Science Notebook. Students will record their findings, questions, experiments, results, etc. in their notebooks. Notebooks are collected at the end of the unit and graded. Your child's grade and notebook will be shared with you at conference times. Notebooks are graded on quality of written material, organization, layout, and reflections. Students also receive a grade for their effort and participation during the unit.
Social studies lessons are taught to students in between each of the science units. Social studies lessons consist of learning about national holidays and why we observe them or history associated with them, as well as current events in our society. The current events lessons are taught with Scholastic News magazine. Scholastic News magazine also incorporates mapping skills, another major social studies concept students need to learn.
