We are learning about the beginning of our country by researching a person who lived during the American Revolutionary War period. Each student will write a biography and prepare a slide presentation that we will compile as a class. Mrs. Brown, our librarian, is assisting the students in learning how to find and evaluate websites for useful information. She is also helping them use citations for internet and other sources of information. This exciting project will take us a couple of months to complete!
McClure's Spanish-English Dual Language Program has arrived in fifth grade! The program is based on the Gómez & Gómez 50/50 Dual Language Enrichment Model developed by Dr. Leo Gómez and Dr. Richard Gómez. Please visit their website for more information. http://dlti.us/
The students in the program are considered one class with two teachers: Mr. Gonzalez provides instruction in Spanish and Mrs. Kjeldgaard instructs in English. Students receive reading in both Spanish and English. The other subjects are divided between the teachers by language. Math is taught in English, whilescience and social studies are taught in Spanish.
The children change classrooms each day after the noon recess. Both teachers assign homework: Mr. Gonzalez's in Spanish and Mrs. Kjeldgaard's in English. Thirty minutes of reading an Accelerated Reader bookin either Spanish or English is a daily homework assignment. The AR goals are set in both languages at each student's "just right" reading level. Each quarter students must reach their book level and point goals with at least an 85% average score on the comprehension tests in both Spanish and English AR reading.
"Language of the Day" is an inclusive, community-building feature of the Gómez program. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays all McClure students, staff, families, and community members are invited and encouraged to use Spanish when greeting and interacting in routine circumstances. On Tuesdays and Thursdays these familiar interactions are conducted in English. Language of the Day gives everyone a chance to be bilingual!

Specialist Thomas Knoll
Specialist Evan Mettie
The 2006-07 and 2007-08 classes wrote to Thomas during his 15 month deployment in Iraq. We were honored when Thomas and his parents visited both classes during his brief leaves back home. Thomas is on his second deployment in Iraq. Here's a link to his farewell, covered by KNDO TV on Veteran's Day, November 11th, 2009. http://www.kndo.com/Global/story.asp?s=11488603
Evan was deployed twice to Iraq. On January 1, 2006, Evan suffered a traumatic brain injury while on patrol. He was hit by shrapnel when the Humvee in which he was riding was blown up. Since then Evan has been hospitalized and lived in various rehabilitation centers until he finally returned home at the end of March. Through veterans' aid and generous community donations of time, materials, and funds, the Metties have an addition to their house equipped to help Evan continue his rehabilitation. Photos and newspaper articles about Evan and his loving and supportive family can be seen at the following Yakima Herald Republic website. http://yakimaherald.com/projects/mettie/Home.html
