Wow! Here we are at the start of a brand new school year! I have lots of fun things planned for the year.

A NOTE ABOUT ATTENDANCE

The school days build on one another. The most important part of a successful year is being here on time every day. The teaching and learning that goes on during our day cannot be duplicated. Please be assured that if your child says “We aren’t doing anything” on a certain day they are seriously mistaken. I intend to have meaningful lessons prepared for every day, even ½ days and days right before and after vacations. There are days in our school year calendar that would be perfect for dentist and doctor appointments that are hard to schedule outside of the school day:

v      Monday Sept. 27 noon release

v      Monday Oct. 8 NO SCHOOL

v      Monday Nov. 1 -  Friday Nov. 5 noon dismissal (conference week)

v      Thursday Nov. 11 no school

v      Wednesday Nov. 24 noon dismissal

v      Thursday Nov. 25 & Friday Nov. 26 no school (Thanksgiving)

v      Monday Dec. 20 – Friday Dec. 31 no school (winter break)

v      Monday Jan. 17 no school (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)

v      Wednesday Feb. 2 noon dismissal

v      Friday Feb. 18– Tuesday Feb. 22 no school (unless we have snow days to make-up)

v      Monday Mar. 21 – Friday Mar. 25 noon dismissal (conference week)

v      Monday March 28 – Friday April 1 no school (Spring Break)

My teaching philosophy is that learning should be challenging, engaging, and rewarding. I love to have fun in my class. I also have high expectations for every child to respect themselves and others, accept responsibility for their actions both good and bad, and to behave reasonably even when things don’t go their way.

AR GOALS

The standing guidelines for 4th and 5th grades are that the average percent correct needs to be at or above 85%. In my class if you are between 80% and 84.9% you are "under the poster". If you are less than 80% you are "in the corral". I set a book level goal for each student, they need to reach it or exceed it. I am very strict when it comes to AR. My reasoning is:

  • This is totally in the student's control.
  • Their reading range, point goal, and book level goals are set according to their specific ability levels.
  • AR is assigned as homework every night.
  • I read the AR report daily and coach those that aren't quite making it.
