SHOULD I KEEP MY CHILD HOME?

The indicators listed below apply to many illnesses.   If they are present, they do suggest that the child should stay home from school until the symptoms are no longer present and/or a medical provider has indicated that the child may return to school.

Summary:

A child should be kept home if he/she has:

·           Persistent sore throat accompanied with a fever

·           Red eyes with white matter discharge

·           Fever over 100.4 F (38 C)

·           Persistent fever for more than 24 hrs

·           Undiagnosed rash

·           Diarrhea for more than 24 hrs

·           Yellow or greenish runny nose

·           Irritability associated with lack of appetite, fatigue,   fever and/or discomfort.

Fever

If a student has a fever over 100.4 F (38 C), he/she should stay at home. A fever lasting longer than 24 hours in any illness, or one that is 105 F or greater, indicates that a visit to the doctor is needed.

Rash

Any rash needs to be evaluated by a physician unless the cause of the rash has already been diagnosed. Itchiness of the rash is not necessarily a sign of infection, but it should be evaluated.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea may accompany a number of infectious diseases. Children with diarrhea should stay home until that is resolved.

Runny Nose

Clear nasal discharge may signal a cold, or it may indicate an allergic reaction, especially if accompanied by watery eyes. Yellow or greenish discharge may         indicate an infection or obstruction with a foreign body in the nose. Breathing may be noisy. A physician needs to evaluate the cause of the yellow or greenish discharge before the child returns to school. If breathing is labored, immediate medical attention is indicated.

Sore Throat

Sore throat can be a minor problem; it may also accompany potentially more significant infections, such as streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat), infectious mononucleosis, or even serious generalized illnesses. Check for accompanying fever. Refer for medical care if discomfort or pain persists. Absences for more than three (3) consecutive days require a doctor’s note to be excused.

Attendance is the most critical aspect of student success. Excused absences for illness, religious observance, school activity, and emergency are observed. Unexcused absence of five (5) days in a month or ten (10) days in a year will begin the juvenile court petition and/or contempt truancy process. Absences may be pre-arranged in cases where parents have a compelling reason to have students out of school, and the excuses do not fit the approved excuses as described above. If approved by the principal, it enables the student to continue school work with excused absences.

Scheduling appointments: Parents or guardians are strongly encouraged to make appointments (doctors, dentist, etc.) for their child after school to avoid interruption of the school day. (Teacher's teach until 3:15)
