WHAT'S IN A NAME? The Maryland State Department of Education has changed the guidance counselor job title officially to school counselor to more accurately reflect our services to the school community. As a result, HCPSS is supporting the office name change to Counseling Center as well. When you hear our Counseling Center secretary's greeting when you call, know that you have reached the correct office. Thank you for welcoming and embracing the change!
PLANNING FOR COLLEGE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
It's never too early to start preparing for college. To help you and your parents chart your path to college, check out the link below that the University System of Maryland has created. It contains information on choosing courses in middle school and high school, participation in extracurricular activities, paying for college, and exploring college campuses.
HOW TO ORGANIZE YOURSELF FOR A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL YEAR
1. Copy BMMS's yearly rotation schedule in your planner so that you know which classes you have and which class you don't each day.
2. Keep a running "to do" list going in your planner and cross off items as you complete them.
4. Establish a routine time for homework and allow for balanced leisure activities.
5. Manage your time effectively. Prioritize the order in which you will do your homework (and this includes working on projects and studying). Estimate how much time each task will take. Get to work and try to match your estimated time.
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU PERCEIVE A PROBLEM
Depending on the situation, it depends on who can help you the best. If the problem occurs within a class, contact the teacher. If the problem is in several classes or your child is having a difficult time making the transition to Burleigh Manor Middle, contact your child's counselor. If the problem is disciplinary in nature or occurs on the bus or at the bus stop, contact a school administrator.
What if your child is not placed correctly in a class? Call the Counseling Center's office at the number above to verify last year's teacher recommendations. If there is an error, we will fix it. If the recommendation does not suggest an error in course placement, we hold that recommendation until this school year's teacher(s) gets to know your child and his/her abilities and work habits. After the first quarter, communicate with your child's teacher to see if there's a need for a change in placement. (Also, watch for GT testing and placement review dates!)
