Welcome to Mrs. Stockwell's First grade webpage!
Reading
For the next two weeks we will be concentrating on learning about short and long vowels a, i, and u. We will also be working with words that have the blends fl, bl, pl, tr, pr, and br. We will still be reviewing rhyming, antonyms, and putting our words together to make simple sentences. The students are doing a better job with their consonant sounds and are able to sound out many words. Keep practicing at home.
Math
We are still concentrating on story problems involving addition. Students will need to show how they get their answer using numbers, pictures, and words. We have begun simple addition and will soon move on to simple subtraction. The students will also be working with the coins penny and nickle. We will count change to 25 cents. We are also beginning to tell time to the hour.
D.I.R.T.
We have a schoolwide program that helps students to become better readers D.I.R.T.. It stands for Daily Individual Reading Time. First Grade students are required to read each night for 10 minutes. If your child is not reading yet you may read to him/her. Please remember the more a child reads the better they get. Please remember to fill out and sign your child's D.I.R.T. sheet nightly.
W.O.R.M.
Our school also has a math program W.O.R.M which stands for Working on Roosevelt Math. Students in first grade are required to practice some kind of math (counting money, flash cards, counting orally, etc.) for 5 minutes each night. Sometimes I may send something home that you and your child can work on together. You may count that as minutes. Don't forget to write down the minutes spent on math on your child's W.O.R.M. sheet.
Homework
**Homework will be sent home 1-2 times a week - usually on Tuesday and Thursday. Please go over it with your child but let them do the work.

We will have show and tell every first Friday of the month. Items brought in should be school appropriate. I would advise against anything electronic or valuable. The school will not be responsible for lost or stolen items so have your child carefully choose what to bring.
