Thanks for all of your donations for our Have a Heart program to benefit Children's Hospital. We still have a week left so keep sending in your change.
Reading
We are still working on contractions and adjectives. Please keep reviewing those reading strategies home. Remember the more your child reads, the better they get.
**The students did a great job reading to the class. It was interesting to see what books they selected on their own. We enjoyed each one. The students will have a second chance to read to the class starting this week. In a few weeks we will be working with one of the second grade classes to start a buddy reading program. Each student will be paired up with a second grader and have a chance to read and have a story read to them.
Writing
We will be concentrating on many writing activities in the coming months. Students should be able to write a complete sentence beginning with a capital letter and ending with a punctuation mark. We will next be working on detail with adding adjectives. Students are to be reminded to go back and read what they have written to see if it makes sense.
Spelling
We have begun spelling. Our spelling program is Sitton Spelling. It is not a Friday test program. It is a program designed to get our students to be every day spellers. A list of this year's words has been sent home. Each student will work on these words throughout the year. We will have lessons to go along with words that we will be working on for the week. The students will write the words in their planners so that you can work on them at home too.
Math
We have begun subtraction. Please review facts at home. We are still working with ones and tens and identifying what number they would make. The students will also be working with the coins penny and nickle and dime. We will count change to 50 cents. We are working on time to the half hour now.
D.I.R.T.
We have a schoolwide program that helps students to become better readers D.I.R.T.. It stands for Daily Individual Reading Time. First Grade students are required to read each night for 10 minutes. Books and poetry will come home frequently and can be used for D.I.R.T. minutes. Please remember the more a child reads the better they get. Please remember to fill out and sign your child's D.I.R.T. sheet nightly.
W.O.R.M.
Our school also has a math program W.O.R.M which stands for Working on Roosevelt Math. Students in first grade are required to practice some kind of math (counting money, flash cards, counting orally, etc.) for 5 minutes each night. Sometimes I may send something home that you and your child can work on together. You may count that as minutes. Don't forget to write down the minutes spent on math on your child's W.O.R.M. sheet.
Homework
**Homework will be sent home 1-2 times a week - usually on Tuesday and Thursday. Please go over it with your child but let them do the work.

We will have show and tell every first Friday of the month. Items brought in should be school appropriate. I would advise against anything electronic or valuable. The school will not be responsible for lost or stolen items so have your child carefully choose what to bring.
