Dear Parents,

Welcome to Mrs. McGill's Speech Language
Therapy page!   Most children who receive speech and language
services at Lakemore Elementary School attend two therapy sessions each
week.   Although we work hard during therapy, we usually manage to
have fun, too.

Receptive Language Skills:
Children who don't always understand everything that other people say to them may have receptive language delays.   This can affect their ability to follow directions and interact with other children and adults.

There are many things that can be done to help your child improve his receptive language skills.   They include the following:
1.   Talk about everyday events.   Start by raising questions or making comments that he has to understand in order to go on with the conversation.   Center your conversations on things he is interested in, so he is prompted to try to comprehend what you are saying.
2.   Get your child thinking.   Ask multiple choice questions, like "Do you like to go outside to play, to take a bath, or to go to sleep?"     You may need to give the good choice first; otherwise he may repeat the last thing he hears.   Asking in this way prompts him to process what he has heard.
3.   Offer extra practice with "wh" questions.   Examples:   Where is your ball?   When do you want to go outside?   Why do you like that book?
4.   Play a "follow directions" game.   For example, if your child asks you for a cup of water or a book, say, "Oh, let me help you get that.   But first you have to pull me up from my chair.   Then you have to show me where the cup is."   Keep making requests, at first with only one thing, then two things and so on.   This works by motivating him.   In order to get what he wants he has to process and understand your requests.
