How delightful it is to explore the wonders of language and thought with my students!  So many writers invite us to ponder the limitless possibilities, and my students never cease to amaze me with their insight when they reflect on what these writers have said about the importance of language and thought.

"In the arms of language, children will discover
the family of humanity. They will learn what
has gone before, and they will learn what is left
to be done. In language they will learn to laugh,
and to grieve, to be consoled in their grief, and to
console others. In language, they will discover
who they are."                            -Tobias Wolff

"We are what we imagine. Our very existence
consists in our imagination of ourselves. Our
best destiny is to imagine who and what, and
that we are. The greatest tragedy to befall us
is to go unimagined."      -N. Scott Momaday

"Poetry is like a bird; it ignores all frontiers."
                                   -Yeugeny Yeutushenko

"Fiction is like a spider's web, attached ever so
lightly perhaps, but still attached to life at all four
corners."                                  -Virginia Woolf

"I only have twenty-six letters of the alphabet;
I don't have color or music. I must use my craft
to make the reader see the colors and hear the
sounds."                                -Toni Morrison

May God keep us
From single vision.
                                             -William Blake

"To feel the intimacy of brothers is a marvelous thing in
life. To feel the love of people whom we love is a fire that
feeds our life. But to feel the affection that comes from those
whom we do not know, from those unknown to us--that is
something still greater and more beautiful because it widens
out the boundaries of our being, and unites all living things."
                                                             -Pablo Neruda

"Writing is a struggle against silence."
                                                            -Carlos Fuentes

"The person who writes out of an inner need is trying to order
his corner of the universe; very often the meaning of an
experience or an emotion becomes clear only in this way."
                                                            -Maxine Kumin

"Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence.
It forms the quality of light within on which we predicate our
hopes and dreams toward survival and change, first made into
language, then into idea, then into more tangible action."
                                                                  -Audre Lorde

"I am simply asking for a theater in which adults who want to
live can find plays that will heigthen their awareness of what
living in our time involves."                             -Arthur Miller
