            Hello and welcome to Springfield High School. We will be back to school in just a few short days. Make sure you have the following items for your history or Street Law class.

1. Spiral Notebook (for notes)

2. Loose leaf paper (for classwork, homework and quizzes)

5. A positive attitude

What is World History?                                                        

 

In  World History we learn about ...

The Scientic Revolution!

Nicolaus Copernicus, Heliocentric theory, Galileo Galilei, Andreas Vesalius, John Locke, Baron de Montesquie,  metaphysics, Thomas Hobbes, Chemistry, and much much more!

The English Civil War

Parliament, Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, Cavaliers (Go CAVS!) & Roundheads, William and Mary,  King vs. Parliament.

The French Revolution!

Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, sans-culottes, The Three Estates, Catholic Church, Nobility, bourgeoisie and the peasants, Guillotines! The Bastille, Reign of Terror, Napoleon Bonaparte and Waterloo! "It is a far, far better thing I do, than anything I have done before..."

The Industrial Revolution!

Cotton and Textiles, Factory System, Coal, Steam Power, Capitalism, Socialism, Henry Ford, Unions, Communism! Henry Bessemer.

Nationalism!

The rise of Germany, Italy, India, China, Japan and Austria-Hungary. The desire for self-rule, the desire for power and empires. Growing militarism.

Imperialism-

The growth of empires. European domination of the native cultures of Africa and Asia. The resistance of the Zulu and Ethiopian nations. King Mongkut and Siam (Anna and the King!) The Opium war and assault on China. Japanese militarism. Ci Xi. Sun Yat Sen. Mohandas K. Gandhi. The Boxer Rebellion.

World War I

The 4 M.A.I.N. causes of WW1. Central Powers vs. Allied Powers. Gavrilo Princip, Archduke Francis Ferdinand. Germany and Otto von Bismarck. The introduciton of airplanes, submarines, machine guns,  trench warfare, tanks and poison gas. The German "Schlieffen" plan.  "All Quiet on the Western Front", Propaganda, Doughboys, Treaty of Versailles (1919).

World War II

Rise of facism and militarism in Germany, Italy and Japan. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party, 1933-1945, the invasion of Poland on Sept 1st, 1939. Japan's invasion of Manchuria and mainland China, Dunkirk, the fall of France, North Africa campaigns, Erwin Rommel, Sir Bernald Law Montgomery, Dwight Eisenhower, Douglas McArthur, George Patton, the true stories of Siegfried Knappe, Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, the "Screaming Eagles", Hiroshima, Nagasaki, the story of Oskar Schindler, concentration camps, Operation Barbarossa, the beginning of the Cold War ...

The Cold War

This is our biggest unit! End of WW2. Post war Europe. The Iron Curtain. Nuremberg trials. NATO vs.Warsaw Pact. The rise of the USSR. Sputnik, the space race, Hungarian and Czechoslovak uprisings. The Cuban missile crisis. Changing technology. Global superpowers. Detente'. The modern world, technology, schools, medical care, Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Middle Eastern conflicts, War in Iraq, 9/11 and the war on terrorism. The United Nations.

Street Law 1

  • Discussed what law is, and how to balance rights with responsibilities. 
  • Ex. The case of the Shipwrecked sailors.
  • Examined the drafting of laws.
  • The importance of advocacy, lobbying, and voting.
  • Methods for solving disputes ( arbitration, negotiation, mediation and the courts).
  • Identified the different courts and court systems.
  • Leaned when to decide you need a lawyer and what questions and ask your lawyer. ( Discussed relationship between lawyers and the law).
  • Talked extensively about CRIME. ( Gangs, drugs, attempt, conspiracy, suicide, homicide, rape, arson, vandalism, robbery,
  • extortion, burglary, receiving stolen property, computer crimes and many more!)                          
  • Evaluated defenses to crime (justified self-defense, not responsible, incompetence, no crime committed).
  • Examined the criminal justice process ( What to do when arrested, rights of the accused, interrogations and confessions, police force and excessive force).
  • Arrest procedures-Booking, bail, pretrial release, preliminary hearing, pretrial motions, exclusionary rule, and plea-bargaining.
  • Examined the rights of the accused ( Rights to a trial by jury, speedy and public trial, freedom from self-incrimination and the right to counsel.)
  • Discussed the purposes of punishment in our criminal justice system in sentencing and parole.
  • Debated the issue of capital punishment. ( This was a great exercise!)
  • Identified the purpose of juvenile justice and juvenile accountability versus adult accountability.
  • Listed the many civil wrongs (torts) that many people take a court in a civil action (lawsuit). 
  • Ex. Strict liability (lung cancer, in store accidents), intentional torts ( smashing someone's windshield, damaging someone's reputation).
  • Discussed auto insurance, compensatory damages, assault, battery, force allowed in protecting property.
  • The students engaged in open discussion and debates over all these topics    and matters of current events, the students also did individual research, group projects, and role-playing activities.
