Irish Pride is the positive behavior program in the elementary school and the goal is to
increase academic achievment and social success. Our three school-wide expectations are Be Responsible, Be Ready and Be Respectful. The focus on these expectations is to ensure that they are taught, reinforcedand visible.
To
teach the expectations, students have participated in a number of activities and lessons. We began the year with an Irish Pride Kick-off to introduce the program. As the week continued, students traveled to stations around the school to learn about and practice the expectations. Later that month, students had to reflect on what they had learned and fill in the chart with their own examples. And now this winter, we are revisiting the expectations once again, and students are reflecting on how well they demonstrate the expectations by coloring the chart; indicating areas of strength and areas of need. (See the teaching matrices included below)
To
reinforce the expectations, staff hand out "shamrock slips" to students demonstrating school expectations. Shamrocks are turned in to the Shamrock Stop in the office for biweekly drawings. Entire classrooms that are demonstrating expectations receive a "Caught Ya" certificate, which is shared on the morning announcements. And our custodial staff assist us in passing 3 Golden Dustpans around, awarded to those who were most responsible in taking care of their classrooms each week.
To
make the expectations visible, we have the Irish Pride logo and three expectations displayed in a variety of ways. There are posters in each classroom and bulletin boards/display cases around the building. A beautiful mural is in the cafeteria, and local businesses provided shirts for every staff member and student. These shirts are worn on late start Tuesdays when we gather for a school-wide assembly; celebrating the successes of staff, students, and classrooms. (See the pictures included below)
