Health for Life
First Semester

Basic Reading

First Semester
Unit 1 - Conflict & Moments of Truth - learn about myths, learn about the narrator, identify clues about a character
Unit 2 - Challenges & Heroes - learn about a folktale, identify first-person point of view, learn about the setting of a story, understand personification
Unit 3 - Experience & Enjoying Nature - identify similies in a poem, imagery in a haiku, identify plot of a story, identify metaphors
Unit 4 - Good Deeds & Friendships - identify the hero of a story, learn about myths, recognize a fable
Second Semester
Unit 5 - Growing Up & Generations - understand character motivation, learn how authors use dialogue in a poem, understand the use of a flashback in a story, identify imagery in poetry
Unit 6 - Relationships & Choices - learn about use of dialogue in a story, learn how conflict is used in a story, understand the use of foreshadowing in a story
Unit 7 - Imagine & Suspense - learn to draw conclusions, learn about personification, learn about making predictions
***We will continually work on spelling throughout the year. Each student will have a weekly spelling assignment based on his/her individual level of instruction
Basic English

First Semester
First Quarter deals primarily with basic writing skills including parts of speech, punctuation, etc.
Second Quarter involves reading fictional literature while encouraging students to write more complex paragraphs and essays.
Second Semester
Third Quarter emphasizes writing for different audiences. Units covered include combining and expanding sentences, writing business and personal letters, and creating short stories.
Fourth Quarter covers reference materials (using a dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, charts, etc.), a unit on poetry, and ends with a classic short story.
