Balanced Literacy
Guided Reading – The students work in small groups at their instructional level. In these groups we read a book and work on:
-
Comprehension
-
Story elements – setting, characters, and main idea
-
Phonics
-
How we can relate the story to ourselves, another book and/or something happening in the world.
The other students are working in centers that strengthen their skills – poetry, writing, ABC (ABC Order and sentence writing, reading, pocket chart, listening, math and spelling.
Working with Words – The 10 weekly spelling words contain a grammar skill to be worked on that week. These words DO NOT need to be drilled at home. The 5 core words at the bottom of spelling lists are the words we expect students to be able to read and spell and are the ones the students will be graded on. We write them in ABC Order, in complete sentences and look them up in the dictionary. They are posted on the Word Wall for the students to use.
SSR (Self-Selected Reading) – The students have a book box with books to read. Some books are on their independent level and some are harder or easier. After they read a book, they record the book’s information and answer a journal question about the story. Each week they get to “brag about a book” by reading their journal.
Writer’s Workshop - The students learn the 5 steps to writing – prewriting, first draft, edit/proofread, final draft, and publish. They create their own books. They will read their own creations to the class.
We also do journal writing.
