Welcome to the Ashford Primary Library
Greetings from the library. Much has changed since last summer. First and foremost, it has been re-arranged in a more efficient manner, thanks to teachers, several parents and custodial staff. We can now have more than one class with each working on their specific assignments . The Smartboard has been permanently mounted on one wall where staff can utilize it for creative lessons (thanks to a teacher's husband with carpentry skills). Additional computers are being set up to to access Researcher. This year, more students will learn to use this program to find information in the library. Renzulli Learning is another program that students will use to find information on their assinged topics. Later, other online programs will be introduced as another research source.
For the first two to three weeks, students will come to the library for storytelling and getting acquainted with the various areas of the library. Some of the skills they learn are: the difference between fiction and non-fiction, the Dewey Decimal system and what those numbers mean, what to look for in a book when doing literacy reading or research or just for fun.
We are recruiting parents to help put books on the shelf, check-in and check-out books, process new books and help students find specific information. Working with parents last year was so much fun and I know it will be that way again.
One more thing, do not forget to have your child turn in his/her Millionaire Club certificate. Final turn in date is September 9th.
Name That Book Club & Contest
Each year HISD Library Services sponsors a Name that Book Contest in the spring. We are provided with a list of 30 book titles the children are to read. Questions at the contest present information from one of the books and the children are to Name That Book! Ashford Primary sends a team to compete. We form a "club" of students interested in trying out for the contest travel team. Those students will meet in the library during intervention time (2:05 -2:30 PM) with Mrs. Gentry and parent coach/readers, who will read and re-read all 30 of the titles to the children throughout the first semester. We encourage all children who are interested to become club members. Second semester we will begin questioning and quizzing verbally about the books using the same question format as at the contest. A travel team of 6-8 students will be selected. Travel team members will stay after school on selected days for additional practice as we approach the contest. All students attending regular club "meetings" (intervention time) will be members of the Ashford "Name That Book" club and will be able to purchase and proudly wear a team t-shirt. Below you will find this year's list ~ the more familiar the children are with each title, the better!
