 Homework

Each student should read for 20 minutes and practice math facts for 10 minutes every night. Please take advantage of the classpage flashcards.

Check your child's blue Take Home folder and agenda daily for additional assignments, projects, or other parent/teacher communication. Please sign or initial the agenda daily.
There is a vinyl pocket in front of the agenda for additional parent/teacher communication.

Daily work does not need to be returned unless marked, "Complete and return." Homework comes back to school in the blue folder.

A bright yellow envelope will come home each Wednesday. This will include important notices from school, HISD, and all graded papers. Please sign, correct with your child, and return graded work if below an 75%, plus any signed forms as requested inside the blue folder. Remember to sign the outside of the yellow envelope and return it on Thursday.

 Communication Reminders

Absences - Should your child be absent from school, it is of utmost importance that they have a dated and signed note (email will also be accepted), explaining the absence, on the day they return to class. Should you need to collect your child early, please send a note or email that morning, so that they will be prepared for an early dismissal (agenda & homework).

Dismissal - It is very important that I be aware of all dismissal plans. The children are in three locations for dismissal - please inform me (note in agenda) and your child should there be a change, so that I can make necessary arrangements for your child to be in the correct collection location!

Birthdays - Birthdays are celebrated briefly during our lunch (11:05-11:35). Parents are encouraged to join but arrangements can be made for sending in cupcakes or cookies. Please do not bring additional treats or favor bags. Policy is to keep it a celebration not a party.

PTO - Please join our wonderful PTO! Have a vested interest in your child's education.

...and remember to bookmark the school web site: http://www.ashfordeagles.org/ It is always an easy way to send an email to me and keep up with what is going on in class as well as school!

 Classroom Management

The students can SWIM to success in the classroom by following some really important rules:

                            Safe Behavior

                                                                ·          Keep hands, feet, and objects to self.

                                                                 ·          Stay in your assigned area.

                                                                ·          Use materials apppropriately.

       Well Prepared:

                          ·         Bring Homework and materials needed to class.

                               ·          Follow classroom routines.

       Incredibly Respectful:

                          ·         Listen politely, raise your hand, and wait to be called on.

                               ·        Use polite and kind words

                               ·         Follow directions the first time.

      Make Responsible Choices:

                              ·         Accept consequences without arguing or complaining.

                              ·         Do your best.

                              ·         Tell the teacher if you have a problem you can't solve.

Money Conduct Code

We use a combination of a stoplight visual and realistic play money as part of behavior management while in school. School and classroom rule infractions result in fines.
Daily conduct will be noted in your child's agenda based on the following:

E -  A great day! Student has earned $0.10 for the day. A dime stamp in the agenda.

S -  some misbehaviors; behavior corrected. A good day. Student has earned $0.05. A nickel stamp in the agenda.

P -  Behavior needs correcting. A sad day. Student has earned $0.01. A penny stamp in the agenda.

U -  Severe or numerous misbehaviors. Parent and Principal notified; behavior must be corrected. A very, very sad day. Student has earned $0.00.

Money earned will be used for visits to the 1st grade store (Donations of prizes are always welcomed!).

Store items include: Stickers, pencils, novelty trinkets, toys, coupons, etc.

Coupons include extra work station time, bringing an item for "Show & Tell", taking your shoes off in class, lunch with teacher, bringing a stuffed animal, etc.

Prices for store items range from $0.25 TO $5.00

Name That Book Club & Contest

Each year HISD  Library Services sponsors a Name that Book Contest in the spring. We are provided with a list of 30 book titles the children are to read. Questions at the contest present information from one of the books and the children are to Name That Book! Ashford Primary sends a team to compete. We form a "club" of students interested in trying out for the contest travel team. Those students will meet in the library during intervention time (2:05 -2:30 PM) with Mrs. Gentry and parent coach/readers, who will read and re-read all 30 of the titles to the children throughout the first semester. We encourage all children who are interested to become club members. Second semester we will begin questioning and quizzing verbally about the books using the same question format as at the contest. A travel team of 6-8 students will be selected. Travel team members will stay after school on selected days for additional practice as we approach the contest. All students attending regular club "meetings" (intervention time) will be members of the Ashford "Name That Book" club and will be able to purchase and proudly wear a team t-shirt. Below you will find this year's list ~ the more familiar the children are with each title, the better!
