Spelling
Spelling words for the first 2 weeks of school all contain short vowel patterns such as bat, best, still, mom and hut. Children learn best by learning patterns. We will be doing lots of word work this year, using patterns. Spelling words will usually be introduced with a pretest and sent home on Monday but this week the words will be introduced on Tuesday, August 31 and the children will be tested on Friday,September 10. Students will be tested on all 15 words.
In second grade students will have written homework every Monday night. They will be expected to alphabetize the spelling words(those that demonstrated the spelling pattern-the first 10) and use the challenge words in sentences(the last 5 words). This homework will be due on Wednesdays this year.
