Week of 9-13
Reading: This week we are reading a story called "Tornado Alert". In this story we will be learning about what causes tornadoes and what we should do to protect ourselves during big storms. The students will also be learning about hurricanes and blizzards this week. Students will work with a partner to learn about one of these storms and then write a small report about them. Remember, book reports for the month of November are tall tales and folk tales. If your child is having trouble finding a book, we have many that are available in the classroom.
Math: In math we have begun our unit on multiplication and division. The students are slowly learning their multiplication facts. Students have been using their white boards to make arrays of facts they are not sure of yet. After we are finished with this math unit we will begin taking multiplication times tests. Tests start with 0 & 1's then 2's, etc. I will send home the graded test with a note that will let you know what facts your child should be studying for the next test. Times tests will be given on Mondays and Thursdays most weeks.
Science: We have been learning about plants and how they live and grow. We made a diagram of a plant's parts. Currently we are learning to group plants. Ask your child what the difference is between a coniferous and deciduous tree. In the next lesson we will be learning about plants from the past and how they are like plants from today.
Religion: In religion we are learning about God's forgiveness, compassion and mercy. We have learned that God wants us to show others forgiveness and compassion as he does. On Thursday Fr. Bob will come to our classroom to talk with us about God's forgiveness and compassion.
With the season of fall comes chilly weather. Our classroom tends to be on the cool side in the mornings. It would be a good idea to have your child keep a uniform sweater or sweatshirt in his/her locker in case the room is cool. Also, please make sure your child is coming to school with a coat each day. Fall weather changes very quickly and I do not want to see anybody cold at recess time. Thank you.
