First quarter has come to an end.  I enjoyed talking to all of you at conferences.  Now that you have the ability to look at your child's grades on line, you will know how they are doing before progress reports or report cards are sent home.   I will try my best to keep it updated but understand that it is a brand new computer program and I am still learning how to work with it.  Most of my students forgot to take their Thursday Folders home today so I will send them home on Monday.

Now that we are in the second quarter, students will be expected to be prepared for class.  They understand the consequences if they are not prepared for class.  The routines and rules of 5th grade are known to all the students so they will be held accountable.  Please help your child by looking at and signing their assignment spiral each school day.  This is a great way for you to see what their daily assignments were and if they have completed their work.  I will continue to check most of their assignment spirals each morning.  Several students have their assignment spirals in order so they will only have to show it to me if you have written a note to me.

I am so proud of all my students, they are learning the ways of 5th grade and excelling in many areas.  Please contact me if you have any concerns or questions.  Thank you for sharing your children with me, they are full of energy and eager to learn.

5th Grade Happenings for the week of

November 9 - 13, 2009

Monday, 11-9:                      Math Study Hall, 3:10 – 4:00 pm

Tuesday, 11-10:

Wednesday, 11-11:               Vocabulary Test, Unit 4

Thursday. 11-12:                    Math Test, Unit 3

Friday, 11-13:

Math Tessellation Project:   Tessellation information was given and assigned to the students on Thursday, November 6.    It is due on Thursday, November 19.  Students will start the project at school but will need to finish it at home.

Thanksgiving Project:

Each student will need to bring in a bag of foam to stuff their pillow and a sewing needle.

The eye of the needle should be big enough for your child to thread but not too big that it makes a large hole in the material.

Threading devices would be greatly appreciated or I will show the children how to use cut paper if they have a hard time threading their needles.

If you have light tan tread, we could use 3-5 spools of it.   We also need straight pins.   I have some thread and straight pins but will take donations of either.    If you would like to donate thread or straight pins, please let me know or send it in as soon as you can.   We will start the project on November 16th so please do not send in your child’s stuffing or needle until that day.    Thanks!

 ***********************************************************************************************************************

Important reminder:  If your child is absent for any reason, they will be given extra time to make up their work.   For each day your child is absent, they have an additional day to make up the work. If there is a test the day they return, they are expected to take it the following day. (If your child is absent Monday, and we have a test Tuesday and your child is absent, they will take the test on Wednesday.) During the time the class is taking the test, your child will have time to review, and we will work together to answer any questions. If your child is absent on the day of the test, they will be given the test the day they return,

if they are prepared for it. (If your child is absent on Wednesday, the day of the test, they will be expected to take it on Thursday, or the day they return unless you notify us that they need another day.) We understand that catching up can be a lot of work and stressful on your child, as well as you.

W e are very flexible!  Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions/comments/concerns. J

Homework:

Students should be able to complete most of their assignments at school but will usually have a Study Link to complete in the evening.   Parents should be checking the Study Links at home with the key that was sent home at the beginning of the unit, in the Thursday Folder.   We appreciate your cooperation and support with this.

If students have more than a Study Link and another assignment or two, something may be going on that we need to address.   If this happens, please ask your child what they are doing during their independent work time.   Students are given enough time to complete most of their assignments in class, with the exception of Study Links.

Just to clarify, we teach Computers, Math and Reading to our homeroom students.

Miss Buss teaches both 5th grade Science and Social Studies classes.

Mrs. Stevens teaches both 5th grade English, Spelling and Religion classes.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns and/or issues.

Welcome to 5th Grade, Room 206!  I am so happy that you are checking out this class page.   Weekly newsletters will be posted on this website to avoid using more paper.  The other neat thing about it being on this class page is that it is always available for you to check out.

5th grade Bible verses for this quarter are at the Homework icon at the top of this class page.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

5th grade is a big transition year: academically, organizationally, socially, and emotionally.   Sports and band are also offered for the first time, and this becomes a good lesson in time management.   I will always help and assist students, while at the same time encouraging independence and responsibility.   By the end of the first quarter we should all be in a well-established routine.

As indicateded above, 5th grade is a year of increased responsibility and organizational skills.   Below are some of the things that will be important for you and your student to know.

Thursday Folders:

Every Thursday a blue Thursday Folder (TF) will be sent home with your child.   It must be signed and returned by the next day.   The TF will include notes and communication from the office and any violations earned that week (see student handbook for information on violations).  The first week of school will be the only time a hard copy of the weekly newsletter will be in the TF.  From that point on, the weekly newsletter be only be posted on this web page.  The weekly newsletter will have dates for special tests, projects and/or school activites for the following week.

Late Work:   Work that is not turned in at the time it is due will be considered late and will not receive full credit.   If an assignment is late, but is turned in by the end of the day or the following day it will receive 10% off.   A "green late slip" will be sent home that day.  It should be signed by a parent, attached to the late assignment and returned to school the next day.  Late work beyond this point will result in 25% off of the grade as per the student handbook.

Assignment Spiral:   All students should have an assignment spiral (AS) with them at all times.   We encourage students to fill out their own AS as things are assigned, rather than wait until the end of the day.   It is important that students get into the habit of filling out their own AS as well as gathering the materials they will need to complete assignments at home.  I will do my best to oversee this during the first quarter. As the year progresses, I will be stepping back a bit to allow the students to develop their own organization skills and encourage them to be responsible for themselves.

Homework/Tests:   As per the student handbook, homework outside of school at the 5th grade level is anywhere from 30-60 minutes per night.   Some days your child may have more than this, other nights they may have none at all.   A large factor in the amount of homework load is determined by how well your child uses class time during the day.   I try to give some class time to work on homework with the understanding that some or all may need to be done at home.  Study Links (SL) are considered Math homework and should be corrected at home.   The SL Family Letter will be sent home in the Thursday Folder at the beginning of each unit.  It will introduce and explain the content and vocabulary for that unit along with the answers to most of the SL problems.       Please notify me if you do not receive the SL Family Letter.

We will try to stagger larger projects and tests so they are not on the same day but there may be days when it cannot be avoided.   There will be a Math Facts Test every week, a Spelling Test and a Reading Selection Test (comprehension and vocabulary) every Friday or the last day of the week.  A chapter Religion Test will be given approximately every two weeks.   Other tests will be listed in the folder on a week-by-week basis.

For Math, an outline with sample problems will take the place of a study guide.   Math journals and Study Links will be sent home prior to a test for study purposes.   An oral review game will prepare students for tests in Religion, and they will be required to take notes and create their own study guide.  English doesn't have an established rountine for testing but will be based on learning the six traits of writing.  Lessons will be followed with writing assignments that will be graded and recorded as tests.  There will be a Reading Unit Test once a unit has been completed.  Students may refer to their weekly Selection Tests to prepare for the Unit Test.

Silent Reading Books:   Students are required to have a silent reading book at school at all times to read when they finish any assignments or tests.   We also have silent reading time once or twice a week.

Appointments:

Please call or email to set up an appointment if you need to talk with me.  If you do happen to stop in before or after school, please keep in mind that I may be working with a student, meeting with a teacher and/or parents or I may be preparing for my next class.  Thank you in advance for being considerate of my time and responsibilities.

I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and your child this year.   As a parent myself, I know how vital communication is and welcome your phone calls, emails, or notes whenever you have a question or concern.    We will be partners in your child’s education so please let me know if you would like to discuss anything with me before the 2009-2010 school year begins.

Happy September,

Homework Assignments (Check box to include this section when classpage is printed:)

Below are your Bible verses (BV) for the first quarter.   You may
recite the BV to me before or after your Religion class.   Arrangements
may be made in advance if another time would be better and it is
mutually agreed upon between us.   Please keep this sheet in a safe
place because this is the only one that you will be given to take home
this quarter.   You will also receive a copy of BV on Tuesday to keep
at school.   BV will also be posted on St. Mary’s web site on my class
newsletter.

earth and the stars:   you are the Lord of all.

October 5-9                                                            Psalm 129:3-4

I call upon you, God, for you will answer me; bend your ear and hear
my prayer.   Guard me as the pupil of your eye; hide me in the shade of
your wings.

October 19-23                                                            Psalm 104:3-4
Let hearts rejoice who search for the Lord.   Seek the Lord and his
strength, seek always the face of the Lord.

October 26-28                                                            Matthew 5:8-9

peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
