Ms. Luedtke's Fourth Grade

January 2009
Math: In January we will begin Chapter 6. We will start off the new year practicing multiplication and division number stories. We will then learn long division as well as a new way to try long division called the Partial-Quotients Method. We will also practice how to interpret remainders in a division number story.
Science: In Chapter 6 we have been learning about the water cycle and weather. We start January by learning about air masses and also how to measure and predict the weather. The students will be performing a meteorologist newscast starting the week of January 12th in groups.
Social Studies: Sequoyah, the Civil War, Civil Rights, and the gold rush are just a few of the main ideas we'll be discussing to finish Chapter 7. The test will be on Monday, January 12th. Look for the study guide on the website the first week of January.
Reading: I am very excited to start Literature Circles in January. The students will get a chance to pick from four books and read in small groups. They will then each have a different role assignment to accomplish each day within their groups. Roles include discussion director, fact finder, character sketcher, wordsmith, and scene setter. The students will be responsible for reading a certain number of pages every day.

Spelling: Each and every one of you should be proud of your accomplishments so far in fourth grade spelling. Almost every student is recieving an A or a B!
English: The poetry booklets turned out great. They will be coming home soon for you and your family to enjoy. Next in Grammar we'll be studying Possessive Nouns. There will be a quiz on January 9th. Our next Writing assignment starting in the middle of January will be biographies.
Book Reports: The assigned Jan book report will be for the students to create a travel brochure based on the book they have read. I will be letting the students know which genre to read on January 5th.
Upcoming Events: Catholic Schools week is from Jan 25th - Jan 31st.
Advent Project: The fourth graders went to TLC in Burlington and helped clean the facility. I was very proud of the students as they scrubbed floors and walls, cleaned the kitchen and bathroom, and cleaned up the toy box. They did a fantastic job. We also donated two bags of toys for the children at the center. It felt good to help out in the community.
