Welcome to Saint Luke's 2008-2009 Third Grade !

Keyboarding
Third Graders are keyboarding and word processing whizzes!
During the first semester, third grade students are using Type to Learn typing tutorial to learn keyboarding skills. During the second semester, the students begin applying word processing skills to their computer knowledge.
Declamation
Third graders will perform one poetry declamation each nine weeks. One student from each classroom will be selected to perform their poem in big chapel.
Third Grade Core Knowledge
Throughout the year, Mrs. March and Mrs. Hyslop will be reading aloud excerpts from Core Knowledge literature. The fourth nine weeks selections include excerpts from: "The People Who Could Fly"

Each nine weeks we will analyze different sayings and phrases. Sayings and phrases for the Third Nine Weeks are:
"Beat around the bush"
"Beggars can't be choosers"
"The show must go on"
"One rotten apple can spoil the whole barrel"
We will discuss the origin of the sayings. Students will be illustrating and describing their concept of what each saying or phrase means.

Reading
Accelerated Reader The Star Test is administered at the beginning of the year to determine which level the student will be placed. Each student is required to have a minimum numberof individual points earned in Accelerated Reading each nine weeks. AR is a part of the Reading grade on the Report Card. Notes will be sent home regarding the number of points each student has been assigned. See your teacher or the librarians to find out about the point system of the books you select. Trade Books
We will be reading a trade book each nine weeks. The books we will be reading are integrated with our Science and Social Studies units. Each book is also an AR book. We will spend many fun-filled hours of chapter reading pleasure and in-depth class discussions with guided learning activities.
Ida B is the trade book for the Fourth Nine Weeks.
Spalding Spelling
Third Graders will enter and study words in their Spalding notebooks. Spelling Tests are on Friday.
Each student must take care to sound, write and mark his Ayers words neatly and accurately into his blue and white Spelling book and into his green Spelling folder.
During homework, students will sound, write and mark Ayers words in Section U and V. We will continue at school with rule application and vocabulary development.
English
Spalding Writing: Utilizes the formatting of Narrative, Informative, and Informative/Narrative guidelines for compositions with ongoing editing and revising.
We will study grammar according to the Shurley Method of English.
Third Graders will follow the Write on Track series guidelines to coordinate the writing assignments of book reports, presentations, and poetry in Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Mythology.
To enhance our writing skills, we will be publishing our works in keyboarding and, beginning in January, Third Graders will be adding word processing classes to their enrichment schedule three times per week!
Math

Third graders begin the year reviewing addition and subtraction facts and learning their multiplication and division facts.
Each Friday, there will be a facts assessment.
