WELCOME TO MS. SARIÑANA'S ART STUDIO

Dear Parents,
We came back from the holidays, and right away continued with our unit on painting.  Students have had a chance to study Impressionist and Abstract painters and paintings.  3rd grade studied Georgia O’Keeffe and painted beautiful flowers. 4th grade painted their pets or their favorite animal. 5th graders studied the Impressionist style of painting and did gigantic flowers a la O'Keeffe.  6th grade studied Abstract style and did some very colorful abstractions from the eye of a cat.  You are welcome to see their artwork displayed outside on the art studio bulletin board.  We also started two new electives, mixed media and sculpture.

Barbara Williams has invited us to participate in the fund-raiser of Art from the Heart for ChildSafe.  This is the letter that was sent to Shirley:
Hi Shirley,
I hope your year is going well. I know you are busy, but I hope you would consider this possibility for St. Luke's. Each year for the last 6 years a local non profit agency, ChildSafe, has held its annual fundraiser in May. ChildSafe is the agency that handles all sexual abuse cases of children infants to 18.  It is an amazing group of people who are really dedicated to the kids they serve.  Our fundraiser is called "Art from the Heart". At this event, art work from participating schools is sold in the silent auction to benefit ChildSafe. The student artists who are the winners (we have 30 of them) are invited, along with their parents, as our guests for the evening, and they are recognized. The students give up all rights to the piece they have entered since it will belong to the new owner who purchases it that night. Mooney Gallery frames the work for us at a reduced rate, and the auction has been a big hit and good moneymaker since it started. I have chaired this part of the gala for the last 3 years, and it is really fun to do. I serve on the Board of ChildSafe and have been involved since one of my closest friends got me "hooked" on the mission of the agency about 10 years ago. It is a horrible topic, but in this society, kids are victimized all the time, as you know. I love helping in any way I can.
Participating schools can vary each year. Cambridge, Scobee in Northside, Alamo Heights Jr. School, Randolph Elementary, MacArthur High School and a home schooling consortium have participated most recently. Most of them have chosen to join in again, and this year St. Mary's Hall came to us and asked to participate. St. Luke's was recommended by someone on the Gala committee, so that is the purpose of my message. Do you think your school would like to join in?
Sincerely,
Barbara Williams

I have selected some of your children's paintings to have the honor to participate.  Of course this is completely voluntary and you can refuse the invitation.  I will send the forms and you can let me know.
We have started our unit in fiber arts.  We will be weaving and sewing.  6th graders will learn to sew on our electric sewing machines. Everybody else will sew by hand and will learn different stitches, how to sew buttons and how to make pillows. Students are very excited and so am I.
I hope to be hearing from the participating students soon.
Silvia Sariñana

P.S.  Here are some new pictures from our artists.
