    OVERVIEW

    with Mrs. U

The overall goal of the Fourth Grade Mathematics Program is to provide the opportunity for all students to learn, use, communicate, apply, appreciate, and enjoy mathematics.  Mathematics instruction will include  problem solving, vocabulary,  geometry, algebra, data collection, measurement, probability, and statistics.
The application of mathematics to real world situations will be emphasized.  Numbers, skills, and mathematical concepts are linked to situations and contexts that are relevant to everyday lives.   Furthermore, students are encouraged to explain and discuss their mathematical thinking in their own words.
Lessons include  whole-group, small group, partner, and/or individual activities. These activities balance teacher-directed instruction with opportunities for open-ended, hands-on explorations, long-term projects, and on-going practice. Content topics and skills spiral throughout the year, being revisited and reinforced in a variety of ways.

Our study of science includes planning and implementing investigations using the scientific method.  Students  analyze information, make informed decisions, and use tools and technology to collect information.   They  study the main strands of science (Earth Science, Physical Science, and Life Science), scientific procedures, and scientists/inventors.
As students learn science skills, they identify components and processes of the natural world including properties of soil and rocks, effects of water on land, and the role of the sun as our major source of energy.  In addition, students identify the physical properties of matter and observe the addition or reduction of heat as an example of what can cause changes in states of matter.   Through investigations and experiments, students gain knowledge of various physical forces.
During the life science unit, students learn the roles of living and nonliving components of simple systems and investigate differences between learned characteristics and inherited traits. They learn that adaptations of organisms that lived in the past may have increased some species' ability to survive.
Furthermore, students learn that a system is a collection of cycles, structures, and processes that interact.  Students discover the whole in terms of its components and how these components relate to each other and to the whole.  Students in Grade 4 also create models of objects and events to illustrate how systems work.  Through their investigations, they will realize that models have limitations and must be modified as new discoveries are made.  Students also study human body systems and analyze them in relationship to other animals' systems.
T hus, Science in Grade 4 is filled with hands-on scientific investigations that lead students to discoveries.   As students leave Grade 4,  they will have a firm grasp of the scientific procedure and a wealth of knowledge and skills.
