Salvete, omnes! Nomen mihi est Magister Williams
Welcome to Athena University, St. Luke's Campus
Dear Latin students,
It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that I will no longer be the Latin teacher at St. Luke's. I have accepted a job teaching Middle School Latin at Flint Hill School in Virginia. This has not been an easy decision for me. I have greatly enjoyed teaching all of you and was particularly looking forward to this coming year. I will carry the many fond memories you have given me for years to come. Thank you for being such amazing students. I will be at school frequently throughout June and July and encourage you to stop by. I will actually need a considerable amount of help organizing materials for the next teacher (this means service hours!) and would love to see everyone one last time before I must leave in August. Please feel free to drop me an email to see when I will be around. I hope your enthusiasm for Latin will remain strong and wish all of you the best of luck. I look forward to seeing or hearing from you in the future.
Avete atque valete,
Mr. Williams

If you are interested in going to Nationals this year, you must submit a request for registration materials along with payment for convention ($400) by May 1. Financial Aid is available! See Mrs. Berdicio. Visit www.njcl08.org for everything you need to know about convention as well as the packet request form.
How to conjugate a verb in the perfect tense:
EVERY verb follows the following rule: Perfect Stem
+
Perfect Tense Personal Endings
The perfect stem is found by taking off the last -i from the 3rd principal part of the verb
EXAMPLE: Find the perfect stem of 'do, dare, dedi, datus'. SOLUTION: Take off the last -i from dedi = ded-(perfect stem of do, dare)
The perfect tense personal endingsare: -i -imus -isti -istis -it -erunt Nota Bene: The perfect tense, and ONLY the perfect tense, of EVERY Latin verb uses these endings
Example: Conjugate 'sum, esse' Solution: You need to know the principal parts of verbs! The 3rd principal part of 'sum' is 'fui', so the perfect stem is FU- Now add the perfect tense endings to the stem: fui (I have been) fuimus (we have been) fuisti (you have been) fuistis (you have been) fuit (he/she/it has been) fuerunt (they have been)

Interesting Anecdotes:
-The 1st Triumvirate was a political friendship(amicitia) between Julius Caesar, Pompey (a very successful general) and Crassus. Crassus was nicknamed Dives, which basically means 'money bags', because he was one of the richest men in Rome. The men met at a town called Luca in 60 B.C. and again in 56 B.C. to strengthen their alignment. Julia, Caesar's daughter, was forced to marry Pompey as part of the alliance. When Julia died, the triumvirate started to fall apart. Crassus decided to lead an army into Syria. He was soon defeated in 53 B.C at a place called Carrhae. He was killed by having molten gold poured down his throat and then having his head severed in order for it to be used as a prop in a play.
Quick Facts: -Cicero was Rome's greatest orator; his name means 'chickpea' --Io was identified with Isis, an Egyptian goddess, by the Romans ---Secunda mensa, lit. second table, was the dessert course; the appetizers were called 'antecena' or 'gustatio' -the first Greek to die at the Trojan war was Protesilaus -The Alps are north of Rome, dividing Italy from the rest of Europe; The Apennines run up and down the length of Italy --The Romans called France Gallia, Switzerland Helvetia, Spain Hispania and Portugal Lusitania --Speaking of nations: the first national hero of France was Vercingetorix, who defeated Caesar; the first national hero of Portugal was Viriathus, who fought against the Romans in Lusitania -the word 'fax' in English comes from a shortened form of 'facsimile' which comes from facio-make and similis-same. The word 'fax' in Latin, however, meant 'torch'
Quid Novi? Be sure to check the calendar regularly for upcoming Latin Club events. Next up: Dec. 15 Certamen Tournament at Churchill H.S. 8:30 a.m.
Congratulations, St. Luke's Certamen! St.Luke's competed at the Churchill H.S. certamen tournament Dec 15. The team consisted of seventh graders Brock S. and Jordan T. along with eighth graders Patrick P. and Graydon D. After scoring a record high 305 points in the 3rd round, the team entered the finals against Saint Mary's Hall and Clark HS. Although they had only placed second in an earlier match against these same teams, Graydon led them to a convincing 215-75-30 victory. Great job!
NJCL Convention Success!
Three St. Luke's Latin students attended the National Junior Classical League Convention held at the University of Tennessee on July 24-29. 8th graders Graydon D. and Maitland R. along with recent alumna Madeleine B. joined 1700 students from across the country to compete in academic tests, creative contests, and certamen. They also participated in many other activities celebrating ancient Greek and Roman civilization. Graydon and Madeleine were both members of the Texas Novice Certamen Team. The competition was especially tough on the novice level, with several teams having already had one year of experience playing at Nationals. No one on the Texas team had played at Nationals, yet they put on a superb display of scholarship, reaching the finals and coming in a very close third place. All three students took home individual awards and are excited for next years convention at Miami University in Ohio. Hope to see you there!
