What is Speech and Language therapy?
Speech and Language therapy is given to students who have a hard time understanding, speaking, or writing language. The delays may involve difficulty learning the sound system, acquiring rules that allow us to combine sounds to form words (spelling, decoding, or encoding words), difficulty following directions or instructions on tests, or could affect our ability to make friends and interact with our peers.
Where does it take place?
Most sessions are held in the student's classroom. The therapist provides additional support (for example, outlines, worksheets, graphic organizers, etc.) based on the student's curriculum. In addition, the theapist can read tests a loud as well as rephrase questions to facilitate the student's comprehension. At times, the student does receive either individualized or small group setting in order to address specific goals. Typically, if a student presents with articulation delays or fluency delays, they will receive therapy in the therapy room.
